RECRUIT / NEW PLAYER INFORMATION
The Colorado State Women's Lacrosse Team is a club sport at Colorado State University. Club sports are organizations that give college students the opportunity to play their chosen sport at a highly competitive level. We've organized a little info here for you... Read through our welcome for new players, info about our Fall and Spring seasons, dues/fundraising and our recent successes on the team.
WE WELCOME NEW PLAYERS WITH OPEN ARMS
Welcome! ...and thanks for being interested in playing on the CSU Women's Club Lacrosse team!
We welcome freshman and upperclassman, experienced and brand-new players who have never held a stick before to come out for the team. We currently have a "no-cut" policy and are very eager to introduce the sport to new players or to just help you improve your game. In the last couple of years in fact, we've had players just learn the sport in the Fall who are starting on Varsity by Spring season! We are a very open, friendly team (no room for snobs or elitists on a Championship team you know!) and would love to meet you. Please contact us with any questions and then come to the first information meeting this coming Fall for more information than you'd ever want to know about our team... grin. Read on for more general information...
PRACTICES, TRAINING, FALL-BALL, & SPRING SEASON
The women on the team are exceptionally dedicated to their team and their sport. The training season for lacrosse starts during Fall Ball - our off-season. We use this time to get back into the game after a long summer break and to fundraise for the rest of the year. We typically have 2 - 3 practices/week during the Fall, for about 2 hours each, from ~4 - 6 pm). Our fundraising efforts include working CSU football and basketball games and hosting lacrosse clinics for local schools to help spread our love of the game. We continue practicing indoors over the winter months, focusing on fine-tuning our plays and defense, and we spend a great deal of time on conditioning. We pride ourselves on knowing that no team we play will be more prepared for any given game than we are. During our Spring season, we practice Monday through Friday during the week (~2 hours/day) and usually have at least one game every weekend.
DUES / FUNDRAISING
The main difference between Division I (NCAA) programs and club sports teams is not the level of dedication of the players, which is just as high on this team, but the level of funding. Club sports have no budget for recruiting -- though we still get "recruits" that want to play for us from all over the country. Also, there is no budget for full time coaches -- though we have three coaches that volunteer their time to help us improve. Finally and most importantly, we currently have a very limited budget to help support the actual players on the CSU Women's Lacrosse team. As a club sport, the team receives a limited annual budget (~$5 K) from Colorado State University student fee allocations. However, this falls well short of our annual operating budget (~$40 K). Therefore, we generate most of our budget from player dues and fundraising activities. While we work very hard to fundraise for ourselves, we also try to get any contributions from our family, friends, fans and community (See Donations page!). There are no tuition, equipment or travel scholarships for the women who play -- in fact, between team dues and trip fees, a varsity player can expect to pay ~$500 year out of pocket to play on the team. As our national exposure increases, we can expect our travel budget to correspondingly get higher and higher. For example, this coming year, in addition to our Spring trips to California, Utah, Nationals, etc. we are also going to try to go to a Fall tournament on the East Coast to increase our National exposure and play teams we wouldn't normally get to play.
CSU WOMEN'S CLUB LACROSSE RECENT HISTORY
2004 - 2005
We made it to the Nationals Final Game!!
The CSU Women's Lacrosse team made it through all the Nationals brackets to the final game on Saturday, May 14. It wasn't an easy road - with atrocious weather conditions in Minnesota (coldest day in historical record on Friday!) and amazing competition from the other teams.
The trip began on Thursday, May 12 with a good game against a very classy Lindenwood team (Final score: 22 - 4). On Friday, we faced an early morning game against a tough Santa Clara team (final score: 17 - 5) and then had to play a hyped-up Florida team, coming off a big OT win vs. Navy, in the afternoon. We initially came out a little flat against Florida - the game was tied 3-3 at halftime. However, the CSU girls pulled themselves up and came out roaring in the second half... going on a 7 - 0 scoring run for a final score of 10 - 3! This granted us our first-ever trip to the Final Game at Nationals -- where we were facing reigning champions Cal Poly.
The final game was, to all the team's general agreement, not our best game (Final score: 3 - 14). Unfortunately we just weren't quite playing our normal high-quality, high-intensity "CSU-type lacrosse". Maybe some of the hype surrounding the game (play-by-play announcers & video cameras everywhere -- the game was shown on CSTV on June 2) got in our heads... but that's okay. Now we have the experience under our belts and we'll just give it our all next year.
We want to say a HUGE Thank You to all our supporters. We're SO PROUD of our girls. They represented CSU with so much class, dignity, spirit and heart. Time & time again I was told how much other teams enjoyed playing us because of the quality and sportmanship of the team. We'll miss the seniors: Juli, Kayna & Whitney, so much next year. Thank you girls for all the hard work and fun you've brought the team. It was an amazing season -- one you all should always be proud of. Can't wait for next year!!
2003 - 2004
The CSU Women's Lacrosse team was a major contender for the national title in 2003 - 2004 and will be vying for the number one spot this coming year. Following an undefeated (5-0-0) Fall 2003 season, we were ranked 17th in the nation (tied) in US Lacrosse magazine's pre-season winter poll. This was the first time in the history of the CSU Women's Lacrosse program that we were recognized by the national lacrosse community -- and we took advantage of it. Valentine's Day weekend (Feb. 13-16, 2004) we travelled to San Luis Obispo, CA to compete in a huge, top-20 tournament hosted by the defending national champs. At that tournament, despite it being our very First full-field game of the season (restricted to playing indoors on a track with only one goal during the winter), we gave the defending national champs a run for their money. The success continued throughout the season. For the first time in Spring 2004, we competed in a league that we organized (the RMWLL - Rocky Mountain Womens Lacrosse League) that included teams from Colorado and Utah. Our record in the RMWLL was undefeated and and our overall record was 12 - 4. We won the RMWLL conference by winning a tough game against Brigham Young University (score: 8 -7), whereby winning an automatic bid to the US Lacrosse Women's Division Intercollegiate Associates 2004 National Championships in Saint Louis. At Nationals, we had some "first-timers nerves" to overcome in the first game, but ended up putting in an excellent showing the remainder of the weekend. At the end of the tourney, we had beaten... and we ended the season ranked 7th in the Nation. We had proven to ourselves and shown the rest of the nation that we deserved to be at Nationals. Having only graduated two Seniors and with a strong incoming Freshman class we expect even greater successes this coming year.

FALL BALL SETS UP OUR SPRING SEASON (Originally from Winter 2004)
We had a really wonderful, UNDEFEATED 2003 Fall Ball season. Practices were intense, we brought in some great new talent and the players are really looking and playing like a team. As a reward for all of our hard work, the CSU Women's Club Lacrosse team has been recognized by US Lacrosse magazine in its pre-season TOP 20 rankings!

FALL BALL GAMES HAVE STARTED WITH A BANG... (Originally from Fall 2003)
We had our first "official" lacrosse game of the Fall Ball season this past Sunday, October 13.
The games were held down in Greeley at UNC, and both our teams had fantastic games. The CSU Varsity played first against the Air Force Academy Varsity, gaining themselves a 10 - 5 win in a beautifully played game, especially considering it was the first of the season! All aspects of the game looked great, with the mid-field transition and stellar defense stealing the show. In the second game, the CSU JV played against the JV of UNC. This was a great chance for everyone to get lots of playing time, as our JV girls beat the competitors 16 - 1!! Congrats to our new players for playing in their first full-field game!! Special congrats also to Jen Gunz, Meghan Lyle, Heather Nielsen and Jersey Rice for each having at least a hat-trick (+ 3 goals) game on attack! For more statistics on the game check out the "Roster" site above.
GAME NOTES
10.9.04 CSU at Regis University W 12 - 8
It's always nice to start the year off right... The Colorado State University Rams played in an exciting game this weekend (10/9/2004) against the Division II Regis University Rangers. This was the first test of the new year, with 5 freshman making their official appearance as members of the team. It was a well fought game with some early nerves serving to put us down 2-5 about halfway through the first half. But the girls got back into their usual groove soon enough, scoring 5 unanswered goals before the end of the half to put us ahead 7-5 at halftime. In the second half, excellent goaltending by the Regis keeper along with some questionable shot placement on our behalf (psst... you can't score Through the keeper ladies) allowed the score to get as close as 10-8 before we sealed the deal in the final minutes by tacking on a few key goals. Highlights of the game were the beautiful mid-field transitions, excellent and strong play by the defense and the first goals of their college careers for Emily Martiny and Andee Barocas!! Congrats!!

1st ANNUAL HOMECOMING LAX CLINIC (Originally from Fall 2003)
We held our first annual women's lacrosse Fall clinic this weekend. We had a good turnout and a great group of girls out to improve their lacrosse skills. It was a beautiful day, with Homecoming Day parade floats scooting by on Meridian Dr. Thanks to all the participants for coming out and showing so much enthusiasm! And thanks to the CSU lax team members that did a wonderful job showing the next generation of laxers why we love this game! Pictures from the clinic can be found above in the pictures section.
