Textbook

No required text. Handouts will be provided as necessary

General

Welcome! This is a seminar-style course that will improve your understanding of how the various pieces composing what we call construction project management come together. To accomplish this goal, you will be part of a group that will develop the constructive solution, estimate, schedules, and many other management aspects for a real project. We will use data and procedures similar to the student competitions supported by our department.

Goals

This course will raise your understanding of how a project management plan is developed and presented in competitive situations, where owners want much more detail than a single cost figure. An important goal of this course is to let you see the "big picture" of the various elements composing a project management plan that you have studied in your career so far, and give you a taste of the elements that you will cover in the remainder of your studies. Another goal of this course is to improve your ability to present your plan in a professional and convincing manner. As a result of this course, you will be better prepared to compete in one or more of the regional and national student competitions that the MTCM department supports.

Objectives

The specific skills that you will practice in this course are studied in detail in separate courses, and there may be differences in the mastery level that this course will provide you, depending on your specific background. However, at the end of the semester, students with a passing grade will be able to:

Understand what documentation is usually available on the preliminary stages of a construction project.
Develop preliminary estimates and schedules.
Develop management documentation and plans.
Effectively present a project plan.

Grades

Grades will be determined by your level of class participation and attendance. Each five weeks a partial grade will be posted, allowing you to assess your class standing. These partial grades will be composed of 33% participation and 67% attendance for sessions concentrating on theory, and 67% participation and 33% attendance in skill and practice-oriented sessions.
