Pingree Park

Pingree Park is Colorado State University's mountain campus, but the name seems to refer to the surrounding area as well.  It lies within Roosovelt National Forest, right up against Rocky Mountain National Park.  This is a place called Cirque Meadows, looking west toward Mummy Pass (if you use your imagination, you'll see why it's called that).  I've been to Pingree Park itself twice as an advisor on CSU Honor Program retreats.  On one occasion, we hiked from the campus to Lake Emmaline, a perfect alpine lake nestled high up among the cliffs you see in this picture.  What a hike.  We stayed in cabins while we were at Pingree, and at night, we'd go on hikes by the moonlight and examine the constellations.  One year we passed two bull moose munching on aspen in the darkness.  Part of the area was burned in 1994 and at night, when the moon glistens off the black scorched bark, it is a beautiful place to be. Unfortunately, the CSU Honors Program no longer has the budget to conduct retreats up here, so the new people are really missing out.  In the same area is a place called Fish Creek.  Mark, Frank and I backpacked that area in the summer of 1998.  It rained alot, and was not the best trip I've had.
