Oxidative stress

     Since glutathione normally plays a role in quenching reactive oxygen species (superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase), the depletion of glutathione in response to Cd exposure (Scheller, et al. 1987) may lead to damage via reactive oxygen species (DeVos and Schot, 1981). Perhaps increasing  activity of other antioxidants, such as carotenoids, could improve tolerance to Cd while not interfering with uptake.
