Coach Newton is a native of Penticton, British
Columbia. He grew up playing AAA Midgets in Penticton, and Junior
Hockey in B.C. He started coaching in 1999 with Weber State D2
when they finished 3rd at the National Tournament, a team best.
That team became the first team in five years to beat Life University
at the National tournament, before losing to Miami of Ohio in
the semis.
In 2000 season, Kelly helped coach Weber to the #1 Western seed
and to National Championship game where they lost to power house
Life University.
In 2001 he transferred to Los Angeles with his company where he
helped coach Long Beach State for part of the season. He also
worked as the Head Goaltending coach and Bantam AA assistant coach
for the Anaheim Junior Ducks organization.
In 2002, Kelly worked as a part time coach for Weber State D2
again, losing in OT to Colorado University in the National semifinals
and securing another third place finish nationally for Weber State.
In 2003, Kelly moved back to British Columbia and helped coach
Penticton AAA Midgets to the league title for the first time in
18 years. He also helped coach Weber State's D1 team to a #5 finish
at Nationals during their first year in Division 1.
In 2004, Kelly and his family moved back to the US, settling in
Colorado. He took the year off of coaching to help settle his
family, but in 2005, helped coach Weber D1, finishing the year
in the #6 spot.
Coach Newton has a Masters Coaching level with USA Hockey. He
lives with his beautiful wife Suzanne, daughters Sierra &
Kennedy, and son Joshua in Monument, CO. Coach Newton is looking
forward to a strong season at CSU, hoping to bring the National
title back to Colorado State.
