Pre-Vet Day

Pre-Vet Day is our annual day-long symposium filled with lectures and labs designed for pre-veterinary CSU students. PVD is a unique hands-on opportunity for students to gain information about the world of veterinary medicine, practice what they are learning, and have fun at the same time.

Pre-Vet Day 2008 will be taking place on Saturday October, 18th.

Registration will be due by Friday September 26th at 5pm.

  Lectures:

Animal Nutrition:

Have you ever wondered what the organgutan's diet consists of? You will learn that and more when you listen to Dr. Nancy Irlbeck talk about her experiences as an animal nutritionist. You will be amazed at how interesting nutrition really is!

Canine and Equine Rehabilitation:

Acupuncture is a new and fascinating take on rehabilitation and pain treatment for our companions. This lecture will give you insight on the techniques that are used in alternative medicine. Come and listen to an equine, Dr. Kevin Haussler, who will tell you about canine and equine rehabilitation.

Orthopedics:

"The hip bone's connected to the thigh bone; the thigh bone's connected to the knee bone..." Come and listen to what Dr. Gary Baxter has to say about orthopedics. You will learn basic orthopedic procedures and the techniques that Dr. Baxter uses to repair bone injuries.

Marine Animal Medicine:

Just how do you take care of a sick shark? Dr. Terry Campbell will give you all of the interesting details on how a veterinarian might go about caring for marine animals.

Student Panel:

Come listen and talk to veterinary school students from our own Colorado State University’s professional program. You can ask questions about applying, getting into school, their favorite experiences, how school has been, or anything you can think of. It should be very informative and you get to hear, frist hand, how they got to where they are today.

  Labs:

Large Animal Dissection: WARNING: Not for the weak stomached! This lab is always a favorite on Pre-Vet Day. Be sure to stop by if you think you can handle investigating the inner-workings of large animals. This interactive lab will let you get your hands dirty and expand your knowledge about our bigger companions. *

Physical Therapy: Have you ever wanted to know how dogs recuperate after major surgeries and injuries? We all know about physiucal therapy for humans, but how is this same concept applied to our four-legged frineds? This lab will provide a hands-on experience with different physical therapy treatments for dogs as well as a better understanding of the type of pain management that is used in this field of veterinary medicine.

Animal Reproduction/Ultrasound: Where do those cute little barn babies come from? No, the birds and the bees had nothing to do with it! Join me for our reproduction and ultrasound lab and find out. Not only will you be evaluating reproductive tracts and learning how to score semen, but you will also get to do a breeding soundness exam on a ram and administer an ultrasound exam to ewes.

Small Animal Surgery: Have you ever been curious about what's really involved in small animal surgery? Well, now's your chance to find out! Learn about anesthesia, proper suturing techniques, and post-operative care along with other necessary precautions when it comes down to performing surgery on our small four-legged friends! *

Small Animal Dissection: WARNING: Not for the weak stomached! Get your hands dirty and delve into the inner workings of a small animal! From dog hearts to cat kidneys, you will have the opportunity to learn more abou thte anatomy inside these critters. Experience hands on dissection of a cat/dog and discover the wonders inside! Don't miss this unique opportunity to see for yourself what goes on inside Fluffy or Fido! *

Training and Obedience: Do you have a dog that does not listen and misbehaves? Would you like to correct that behavior? Join me for this lab on dog obedience and learn the tips, tricks, and techniques for effectively correcting your dog's bad behavior. Also, learn first hand from a guide dog owner how her obedient dog has made her life easier.

Cardiology: This will be a lab focused on cardiac auscultation. A heart sounds machine will be used to demonstrate a variety of different heart sounds (eg. murmurs, arrhythemias, and "extra" heart sounds). Students will have the opportunity to listen to normal and abnormal heart sounds, and the mechanism and pathology (when applicable) of each sound will be discussed. The basics of cardiac auscultation will be deomonstarted on a live dog!

The Basics: Every aspiring vet has to know the basics. Learn what TPR is, how to find it, and the normal temperature and heartbeat of animals in the workplace. You can also learn how to properly bandage for all sorts of injuries on everything from dogs to horses. This is a great lab that will get you caught up on what every vet must know.

Exotics:

Come see some different and unique pets! You can get up close to each animal and you will get the chance to learn general information and specific care for everything you will see. The animals will vary from ferrets and sugar gliders to snakes and lizards. It should be a fun experience for all!

  * NOTE: None of the animals used during Pre-Vet Day were euthanized simply for this purpose. Specimens were either already on their way to slaughter, or euthanized at a local no-kill shelter after they failed personality/aggressiveness tests and were deemed unadoptable. Through a cooperative agreement between that shelter and Colorado State University, we are able to use these animals for educational purposes before they are disposed of. We pride ourselves in treating these animals with respect while they are in our possession and ask that you do the same. Thank you.
