Pre-Vet Day

Pre-Vet Day is our annual day-long symposium filled with lectures and labs designed for pre-veterinary CSU students. PVD is a unique hands-on opportunity for students to gain information about the world of veterinary medicine, practice what they are learning, and have fun at the same time.

Pre-Vet Day 2009 took place on Saturday, October 24th!

These were the lectures and labs that we offered to the participants!!

  Lectures:
  Alternative Medicine:
What techniques and procedures qualify as alterntive medicine? Do things like acupuncture, herbal medicines and nutritional therapies acutally work? Join Jessica Rychel to learn about this emerging field in veterinary healthcare.
  Dentistry:
Does your dog Skip have a serious case of bad doggie breath? We all keep hearing more about the importance of dental care for our furry friends. Dr. Sophia Arthur will be teaching us about some of the issues that arise with poor dental care and what you can do to make sure that your pet's mouth is healthy and stink free!
  Necropsy:
. Please note: Due to unforseen circumstances the neurology lecture will now be a necropsy lecture. More info coming soon!
  Dermatology:
Why is all of Fluffy's hair falling out? How do you treat a bird for skin allergies? To learn the answer to these questions and more, join Dr. Sonja Zabel for a lecture on dermatology. Other topics may include autoimmune and nutritional diseases that can affect your family pet.
  Labs:
  Mammary Gland Dissection:
WARNING: Not for the weak stomached! Are you interested in learning more about food animals and reproduction? In this hands-on lab, you will get the opportunity to dissect an entire cow udder! This lab will also include a guest lecturer, whose research interests include mastitis and milk quality. A great lab for those looking for diversity in their Pre-Vet Day experience!
  Ophthalmology:
Have you ever wondered what kinds of diseases and aliments cats or dogs can get in their eyes? In this lab you will learn firsthand about these and many more related subjects from a veterinary student resident who specializes in ophthalmology. You will get you very own cow eyeball to dissect! Learn all the different areas and parts of the eye firsthand!
  Exam Day:
Take a walk in a veterinarian's shoes for a day! In this lab you will take part in procedures that a veterianrian would perform for a typical exam. Learn proper methods for taking temperatures and heart rates, along with other techniques a veterinarian needs to perform a good check-up!
  Cardiology:

This will be a lab focused on cardiac auscultation. A heart machine will be used to demonstrate a variety of different sounds ( i.e. murmurs, arrhythmias, and "extra" heart sounds ). Students will have the opportunity to listen to normal and abnormal heart sounds, and the mechanism and pathology (when applicable) of each sound will be discussed.

  Small Animal Dissection:
WARNING: Not for the weak stomached! Do you ever wonder what your canine companion looks like on the inside? Here's your chance to find out! Get ready to roll up your sleeves and delve into the innards of our furry friends and explore their fascinating anatomy. Perform a thoracotomy, take a peek at the heart, and prepare to get down and dirty for the learning experience of a lifetime. *
  Scrub Lab/Small Animal Surgery:
You have just taken your dog to the veterinary, and now Rufus needs to go " to the back" for treatment, but what happens " in the back"? This lab teaches the basics of veterinary care. Come learn to scrub into surgery, suture lacerated bananas, draw blood from the cephalic vein, give vaccines, and much more.
  Large Animal Handling:
Have you ever felt unsure about what to do with a cow, horse, llama, alpaca, or sheep during an exam? Join Dr. Callan to review the basic restraints and skills to make a day at the vet go much smoother with these "giants"!! Learn how to "throw" and hobble sheep and do mock lameness exams with horses!! By the end, we hope that you will feel capable of handling large animals effectively and without fear!!
  Diagnostics:
As every veterinarian knows, you can't treat an animal until you know what is wrong. This lab will explore some of the tools used to diagnose patients. Learn the basics of reading x-rays and ultrasounds. Analyze blood chemistries and identify parasites that commonly infect animals. You will have the opportunity to make your own diagnoses as you learn about these exciting diagnostic tools!
  Student Panel:

Come listen and talk to veterinary school students from our own Colorado State University’s professional program. You can ask questions about applying, getting into school, their favorite experiences, how school has been, or anything you can think of. It should be very informative and you get to hear, frist hand, how they got to where they are today.

  Exotics:

Come see some different and unique pets! You can get up close to each animal and you will get the chance to learn general information and specific care for everything you will see. The animals will vary from ferrets and sugar gliders to snakes and lizards. It should be a fun experience for all!

  * NOTE: None of the animals used during Pre-Vet Day were euthanized simply for this purpose. Specimens were either already on their way to slaughter, or euthanized at a local no-kill shelter after they failed personality/aggressiveness tests and were deemed unadoptable. Through a cooperative agreement between that shelter and Colorado State University, we are able to use these animals for educational purposes before they are disposed of. We pride ourselves in treating these animals with respect while they are in our possession and ask that you do the same. Thank you.
