January 18, 2001 -- Bob J. Carrell, Jr., Ph.D. and professor emeritus from the University
of Oklahoma, died at home in Fort Worth, Texas, Wednesday, Jan. 17 from heart failure
complicated by emphysema and lung cancer.
After he retired from the University of Oklahoma in May 1992, Dr. Carrell returned to Fort Worth where he had taught at Texas Christian University from 1961 to 1969, the last three years as chair of the TCU Department of Journalism.
During his 23-year career at the University of Oklahoma, he spent 12 as director of the School of Journalism and Mass Communication. His doctorate in mass communication and marketing was from the University of Illinois. He held Bachelor and Master of Science degrees from East Texas State University. As a National Science Foundation fellow, he did post-doctoral work in political communication at The Ohio University, and in 1988 had a Fulbright lectureship in India.
His professional work included eight years in news, advertising and management in weekly and small daily newspapers. Dr. Carrell has done dozens of workshops, training programs and seminars in the US, as well as internationally. He is co-author of a leading text on public relations writing, plus three other books, as well as numerous scholarly articles, papers and monographs and professional reports.
Survivors include his wife, Dr. Doug Newsom, professor of journalism at TCU; a daughter, Carla Freemyer of Asheboro, NC; a son, Craig Carrell of Norman, OK; four grandchildren; four step children and four step grandchildren.
Services for Dr. Carrell will be at Trinity Episcopal Church in Fort Worth at 11 a.m., Monday, Jan. 22. Visitation will be at Thompson's Harveson and Cole Funeral Home.
