7. The cupellation furnace is located in a small adobe structure within an arroyo. The furnace spans the entire width of the building; the chimney is located against the wall that is built into the arroyo, and the firebox empties through a hole in the opposite wall into the arroyo below. The furnace is constructed in the building in order to protect it from wind, which interferes with the cupellation process, and rain which can damage the furnace itself. According to Mr. Cuiza, a cupellation furnace can last many years with frequent repairs.
