Site area as first examined in October 1997 with bone exposed during construction scattered on slope (view to south)

Several shallow holes had be dug into the slope and exposed in situ bone (10/97)

Fall 1997 excavation of two 1 meter test units exposed abundant, well preserved bone.

During the summer 1998, an archaeological field school class was held at the site for a 40 day field session. Students are shown being given first introduction to use of EDM and working to build framework foundation for Weatherport cover for site area (view to west, May 1998).

Setting up Weatherport frame on a less than level surface (May 1998).

Bonebed enclosure in place on the Kaplan-Hoover site (June 1998).

Two bison crania on the western edge of the paleo-arroyo.

During the fall semester 1998, a second class (AP486 Practicum) was taught at the site. Two students (C. Funk and R. Walker) are shown excavating and documenting the bonebed.

The site was a popular destination for school field trips with nearly 1000 local students given tours of the site as part of the fall 1998 AP486 class. C. Nicholson giving site tour and C. Egeland excavating.

Projectile point in situ.

The site area is on private property and access has been restricted while excavations are in progress.

All items uncovered are provenienced using an EDM and documented using a standardized protocol used at a number of other recent bonebed excavations.

Excavations will continue through the 1998-1999 winter. We have several propane heaters in the Weatherport and winter fieldwork in northeastern Colorado isn't really all that bad.
