THE GARDEN DESIGN RESEARCH&SKILLS PROJECT

Introduction and Objectives
The pedagogical intent of this studio project is to provide each student
of design with a method for learning to design and learning the language
of the profession. This particular project establishes a setting
for design expression with regard to research and analysis of important
design theories and practices (archetypes) and for the technology and methods
for writing and illustrating a design research project, multi-media
presentation, and paper about
form and expression in garden design.

An archetype, from Webster's Dictionary, is "a pattern or model of which
all things of the same type are representations or copies". It is a perfect
example or a prototype. The word 'archetype' comes from the Greek 'archetypos'
meaning "original pattern." "All the most powerful ideas in "design"
go back to archetypes. This is particularly true of "design" ideas, but
the central concepts of science, philosophy, and ethics are no exception
to this rule. In their present form they are variants of archetypal
ideas, created by consciously applying and adapting these ideas to reality.
For it is the function of "design" not only to recognize and assimilate
the external world through the gateway of the senses, but to translate into visible
reality the world within and around us." ...from - Carl Gustav Jung, "The
Structure of the Psyche" (1927)

The intended realm of exploration is garden scale in size; a small plaza,
a residential courtyard, or a small urban park. eg. Paley Park, Court
of the Myrtles at the Alhambra, Donnell Residence, Bryant Park, etc.
eg.#2 ...just one of the spaces of the Miller Garden or one of the spaces
of the Bloedel Reserve, or one of the spaces of the Getty Center.

Styles of Garden Design for this research project and paper - C or D
size boards and minimum two 8.5"x11" pages for each style - minimum two
or more illustrations per page - at least one illustration per style will
be two columns - at least two panoramas (three columns) in entire paper.

objectives:
o To explore the art of garden
design in the context of geography, form, and materials.
o To analyze the works of master
designers in order to assimilate for future use their acquired knowledge,
ideas and expression.
o To articulate results of research
and analyses through cohesive integration of images and associated narrative.

The success of this project depends upon the clarity with which the
paper expresses with imagery and narrative the following: 1) the geographic origin (map and description of archetype) of the
garden design style; 2) the defining principles of form and space of the garden design style;
and 3) the defining principles with regard to materials of the garden design
style.
