- Course Requirements -

  • Two papers: the first (2-3 pages) worth 15% of your final grade, and the second (3-5 pages) worth 20% of your final grade
  • Three exams, the first worth 15% of your final grade, the second worth 20% of your final grade, and the third worth 20% of your final grade
  • Attendance and participation in class discussions, collectively  worth 10% of your final grade

*Note: ALL course requirements must be completed in order to receive a passing grade in this class.  This means that you must submit both papers, take all three exams, and attend at least one class. 

Two papers
Paper topics will be handed out in advance.  Rewrites will not be accepted.  Projected dates for paper assignments are as follows:
     Febuary 8: 1st paper topics handed out
     February 24: 1st paper due in class
     March 5: 2nd paper topics handed out
     March 26: 2nd paper due in class

 

Three exams:
The exams will consist of essays and/or short-answer questions.  Exams will not be cumulative.  Projected dates for the exams are as follows:
     February 10: 1st exam: in class
     March 8: 2nd exam: in class
     May 12: 3rd exam: 11:20-1:20

 

Attendance and participation:
Half of this portion of your grade will be based on class attendance; the other half will be based on participation in class discussions.  Class attendance: Attendance will be taken at the beginning of each class.  Students who attend the entirety of every class will get an "A" for the attendance half of this grade.  Grades for less-than-perfect attendance will be assessed on a curve.  Class participation: Participation will be assessed in terms of both quality and quantity; all participation grades will be assessed on a curve.  In general, you will be expected to come to class prepared and contribute respectfully and constructively to class discussions.
