Spring 2010

This course has a common final exam, scheduled for Monday, May 10, 7:00a.m.-9:00a.m. Consult your instructor for room location.  The final exam will not be held in the classroom you met in during the semester.  You must take the final exam at the scheduled time.  Make-ups will not be permitted.  Bring a blue book with you to record exam answers.

Purpose: Exams in this class are designed to test your knowledge of course concepts and determine how well you can apply those concepts to actual communication exchanges.  The speeches this semester have honed your public speaking skills, but this is more than a skills course. You also must understand the theoretical concepts that form the basis for competent public speaking.

a.      public communication

b.      public dialogue

c.       argumentation

d.      civility

List and define the different reasons we speak publicly and give examples of when you have engaged in each.

1) We decide to speak on matters of importance when we feel compelled to speak out on an issue that has affected us. After my mother survived breast cancer I encouraged my sorority to participate in a breast-cancer awareness fund-raiser. 2) We are asked to speak because of our expertise or experience in a certain area. Because I am adopted, I have been asked to speak to couples at my church who are seeking to adopt a child about the challenges adoptive parents might face as their children grow up. 3) We are required to speak in class or at work. I was required to speak this semester in SPCM 200

1 application/essay question (70 points). Sample:
