Ancient Reading

Austin #224-253 (skip #235, 241-242) (#237 = B #87; #239 = B #88)
Burstein #83-91

What is the relationship of the Pergamene rulers with Greek cities (like Rhodes, Athens, Delphi, the Ionian League)? When does it begin? Where is Ionia (Green map p 20)?

The Attalids were not first generation successors of Alexander. How did they come to rule a Hellenistic Kingdom? Whom did Eumenes I have to fight in order to become independent? How did Attalus get the title King?

What powerful western ally did the Attalids join? To whom did Attalus III Philometer leave his kingdom?

What can you tell so far of the nature of Roman involvement in the Hellenistic World?

How important are soldiers in Pergamon?

Green Reading (alongside ancient texts #160, 167, 292)

In Green’s description, how are Alexandria, Antioch, and Pergamon similar to and different from each other? Can you draw conclusions about the Hellenistic “capitals” and kingdoms in general and in the specific characteristics of the different kingdoms?

Write a one page argument about the nature of the three different kingdoms based on the nature of the capital city of each.

F.Y.I. Many scholars believe that Green overstates the demise of the Greek polis (city-state). What does your reading about the activities of (or honors bestowed by) Greek cities suggest about the political activity and independence of the polis? For example, if, as Green says (p. 156) the agora “lost its political associations, and became an exclusively commercial center,” then how do you explain the decisions made by the various cities in their relations (eg., with the Seleucid kings)?
