Description Objectives Semester Project Participation Quizzes Final Exam Student Responsibilities Evaluation Texts Link to a different page for the Course Schedule Course Description: History of Greece from the Bronze Age to 336 BCE, emphasizing political, social, intellectual and cultural developments. Learning Objectives: Students will develop an understanding of the history of ancient Greece while they develop the skills to interpret and analyze evidence and pose arguments of their own making. Students will also acquire the ability to demonstrate those skills and that knowledge in writing and in an oral presentation. Semester Project: Bibliographies, book review, website review, essay, class presentation (instructions). Participation: Discussions will regularly take place on Thursdays, while Tuesdays will be dedicated to lecture, though this pattern is subject to change. Successful participation looks like this: the student shows evidence of having done the reading, having thought about the reading, and of having listened to her or his colleagues. Students will bring a copy of the relevant texts to EVERY class session; close reading will be an important part of lectures and an even more important part of class discussion. Quizzes: Quizzes will be cumulative and they may take any form. Also, they may be announced or unannounced. Quizzes may be based on the reading, on class lectures and on class discussions. No makeup quizzes will be given, but one quiz grade will be dropped before the final grade is calculated. Final Exam: The final exam will be cumulative and largely, if not completely, essay format. 15% participation
