Topic for Outline One (is based on the reading due on January 27): Choose one of the stories in Livy and make an argument about Roman values - in Livy's time -based on that story. You might potentially choose a theme that runs through several stories rather than discussing just a single story, but be careful not to try to cover too much material in such a short paper. There tend to be many layers in the stories, so try being creative and imaginative while staying true to the evidence. Also, make sure not to ignore evidence of other stories if they contradict your theory. Topic for Outline Two (is based on the reading due on January 30): According to Boatwright, et al., the XII Tables "best fit a society where the family and the household are the fundamental units of social life, and agriculture and animal rearing are the primary economic activities." Using evidence from the XII Tables, make an argument about the nature of Roman society or economics in fifth century Rome. You can support or criticize the textbook's conclusions or you may take a different approach entirely. Directions for the Outlines: The outlines will look like this: Thesis: One sentence stating your ARGUMENT (do not use the word "I", just make the argument.)
On February 2 bring two copies of both outlines to class (they can be on the same page). NOTE: If you are not in class on February 2, you can only get ½
credit for the first essay. Directions for the Essay: On February 6 turn in ONE well-written and thoughtful essay, well-supported by evidence (using footnotes). Even though the outlines do not require introductions and conclusions, the essay does. Also, turn in both outlines and the comments by the reviewers. Title, double space or space and a half, 12-point font, reasonable margins, ca. 500 words. |
