ADVICE on ACADEMIC HONESTY

PROFESSOR GAUGHAN'S ACADEMIC HONESTY POLICY

Anyone caught cheating on any assignment will fail the course and the incident of academic dishonesty will be reported to the Office of Judicial Affairs.

If the professor even suspects academic dishonesty a report of the incident will be made to the Office of Judicial Affairs.

A Few Words About Plagiarism
ANY time that you write ANY idea that is not your own, or ANY fact that you do not know first hand, and you do not acknowledge the source from which you obtained that idea or fact it is plagiarism. Anytime you copy three or more words in a row and do not put quotations around the words and cite the source of the quote, it is plagiarism.
ALWAYS cite the source of your information.

The Difference Between Working with Colleagues and Cheating
Students like to (and I think they should) study together in preparation for exams. How can you work together and still ensure that you are practicing academic honesty?

Make sure that the final product is one of your own intellect and not that of your colleagues. Don't write things down for each other, but have each member of the study group write her or his interpretation of the discussion. Also, get together to study and go over potential evidence but when you are preparing to write, do that part on your own. Choose the evidence you want to talk about, make the argument you want to make. Do not write the answers in a group or with a friend; write them alone. This is especially important when, as is often the case in my classes, you are given exam questions in advance.
