If I were writing a topic from Booth's three steps (p. 44) this is what it might look like:

(1) I am studying homicide and power in the Roman republic, (2) because I want to find out how homicide legislation reflects the expansion of the power of governmental institutions in the republic (3) in order to better understand how and when public institutions of government began to replace private power, and therefore how the state, as such, came into being.
