GOALS

Skill Goals:

1) Make historical oral arguments using evidence, analysis and synthesis
2) Develop a professional demeanor

Knowledge Goals:

1) Develop greater understanding of the assigned texts

REQUIREMENTS

1) Provide the professor with a typed version of your presentation including

A. Thesis
B. Evidence you are using to prove your thesis
C. Warrants that connect your evidence to your claims (see Booth handout)
D. Optional: provide the same to the class

2) Take the opportunity for practicing oral arguments seriously

A. Dress for a professional presentation
B. Make your argument persuasive by

i. Knowing your subject

a. Be familiar with every word of the text.
b. Think about the text in the context of Roman history.

ii. Acting like you know your subject

a. Speak clearly and slowly.
b. Make eye contact (or at least look over people's heads and not at the floor).
c. Speak authoritatively: your audience knows the extent of your knowledge, so no apologies for not knowing more than you are required to know. In particular, avoid the use of the phrase, "I think."

3) Be prepared to field questions

4) The time length limit is 15 minutes. Plan accordingly!
