Ruth A. Hufbauer - Teaching

Ecology - BY 320
Every spring (may change to every other spring).
Here is a previous syllabus and general course information sheet (html files). This course rotates through several faculty including Indy Burke, Will Clement, Marlis Douglas and Joe von Fischer and myself.

Pre-requisites: calculus is required for enrollment. I'm willing to waive that requirement if you are reasonably math competent or have other compelling reasons. We don't do proofs in the class, but I will ask you to understand the biological meaning of several equations.

Invasion Biology - experimental course scheduled for Spring 2008
In this 300 level undergraduate course, we will cover ecological and evolutionary hypotheses to explain biological invasions, examples of invasive animals and plants, and approaches to management.

On the Origin of Species - EY592
Taught even fall semesters. We read the entire classic by Darwin, with pairs of graduate students taking turns leading discussions. It is truly remarkable how many entire fields of inquiry this book initiated. The first two times I taught this course, I stuck to the science and kept away from the controversy this book has caused with respect to certain religious perspectives. The third time we address that controversy head on, with extra readings from both sides of the fence.

Writing - EY592
Taught once in Fall 2003. Beginning graduate students wrote an NSF or EPA fellowship application, mid-career PhD students wrote a dissertation improvement grant or other grant application, students with data wrote a manuscript for publication. We had presentations experienced writers (thanks Tom Stohlgren, Tom Hobbs and David Gammon!), editors (thanks Jill Baron!) and panel members (thanks Tom Hobbs!) to hear about their styles and approaches and insights. Students reviewed eachother's projects both to improve them and to learn to give constructive and critical evaluations. Here is the syllabus from Fall 2003. Back in the future if there is popular demand.

Biological control - BI556
This course is not being taught currently.
Previously taught every other fall with Dr. Carol Ishimaru.
