USMA Science Fair awards program |
The USMA is seeking people who are interested in promoting the use of the metric system in high schools by volunteering to judge at regional Science Fairs. The USMA makes available a metric award, for the best use of SI metric measurement, to the over 600 regional Science Fairs affiliated with the International Science and Engineering Fair. In most cases, the regional fair administration must find a local judge to evaluate the exhibits for the metric award. These fairs may be more willing to give our award if we can supply the judges. The local fairs would be happy to have the additional help that a USMA volunteer would be able to offer. It may also be true that a USMA member would be more knowledgeable about SI and its correct use than would a judge supplied by the local fair.
Volunteers who judge may also be given the opportunity to present the metric award to the winner at the awards ceremony. This does not include the possibility of making a speech promoting metric, but does at least permit a word or two to make the metric case before an interested audience of students, teachers, and parents. Judges are not obligated to participate in the awards program, however.
To find out if there is a fair near you, and to find the name of the contact person for volunteering to judge, go to the website of the ISEF (International Science and Engineering Fair) which is: http://www.sciserv.org/isefairs.htm. Over 600 regional and state fairs are listed, grouped by state. If you find one or more fairs at which you could judge, you will need to contact the fair director(s). Tell him or her that you are available to judge for the U.S. Metric Association award. All arrangements are then made between you and the director. (If the director does not appear to know about the metric award, you can tell him or her that it is one of the awards sent directly to all fair directors by Science Service. If they know of the award but inform you that they do not plan on using it in their fair, you might wish to encourage them to do so.) The director should automatically receive the award materials each year along with a judges guide which he or she should give to you.
