IRMGARD HUNT

She was born in
Poland, raised in West Germany, and emigrated to the U.S. as a teenager. During
the next 25 years, Irmgard Hunt lived in the Pacific Northwest, Alaska,
Japan, and England. Between these stations, her travels included Austria,
Germany, Switzerland, Canada, Mexico, and Uruguay. She received her Ph.D. in Germanics from the University of
Washington/Seattle, taught there and in Texas, and has been leading a more
settled life in Colorado for over a dozen years now. A Professor of German since
1995, she publishes both scholarly and literary writing.
Books
include the studies, Mütter und Muttermythos in Günter Grass’
Roman Der Butt (1983), Krieg und Frieden in der deutschen
Literatur: Vom Barock bis heute (1986), and Urs Jaeggi: Eine
Werkbiographie (1993); two volumes of poetry, Schwebeworte (1981) and
Pazifische Elegie (1993); a volume of short prose, Hier. Auf der Erde
(1991), and the anthology (ed. & trans. with Reinhold Grimm) German 20th
Century Poetry (2001). There are five titles of editorships of
journal issues and monographs, and some 30 articles and book chapters.
The title essay “View from America: Land into Literature” in Dimension
2, 4/3 (1997) is a commentary on writing after having changed countries and
languages. On winning the Nobel Prize for Literature 1999, Günter Grass
received an Open Letter, published in TransLit VIII/2, by Irmgard Hunt.
Her poetry, short
prose and stories have appeared in Monatshefte,
Literaturexpress, Flugasche, TransLit, Dimension and Dimension 2,
Schatzkammer, PEALS, Absorb, Zeitschrift für Kulturaustausch, Litfass, and
The Brecht Yearbook, among others. A novel and a long story are in progress.
