5/1/06

Our season is done. We finished 5th at regionals behind CU, UCSD, UCSB and Claremont. Up until our final game it was a pretty dang sweet weekend though.

We started out against UCSD-B on Saturday and rolled them like we expected to. A lot of people got rotated in and everyone played well. Our next game was against Claremont and we clamped down on them early with a straight up mark that totally seemed to flabbergast them. Ford and Bus both got early footblocks and we cruised to a 15-10 game that really wasn't even that close.

We had a bye for the next two hours to get ready for our semifinal game against CU. We came out on offense and very quickly CU went up 2-0. I was definitely thinking to myself that we were going to have a sectionals repeat. The D line came out on the next point to play O and we worked it right down the field and scored. We then proceeded to put two breaks up on them and take the lead 3-2. I was definitely thinking to myself, holy cow, as CU took a timeout to regroup. We then traded out points to take half on them 8-7. The second half didn't go quite as well as the first. They came down zone and the O had a little trouble adjusting and they got a few breaks in a row. We kept playing hard and ended up losing 15-11. We were the closest game CU had all weekend and they were pretty cool and encouraging about how well we played them.

So that loss dropped us down into the second place bracket where we were going to have a Sunday morning rematch (regionals last year) against the much hyped Arizona. We traded the first few points with the D getting turns but having a few offensive issues. We finally got a couple breaks on them and the O had hardly a turn and we took half 8-5. The second half we just dominated with strong man defense and took the game 15-7. We were all pretty happy with the performance that game from both the offense and the defense.

Our next game was against UCSD who we beat real early in the year at the Santa Barbara Invite and who had lost to UCSB in the opposite side of the bracket semi-finals. We traded points for the first several points until the D finally managed to get an upwind break to go up 6-4. The O struggled a little bit on the next upwind point and UCSD got the break back then worked it up for an upwind break of their own. They took half on us 8-7. The second half they had their entire B-team (like 30 guys) plus a ton of people from Campus on our sideline making an ungodly amount of noise. We couldn't talk from the sidelines to the fields hardly at all and they spent a lot of the time not really respecting the sideline itself and the field kind of shrunk width-wise. This coupled with some chippy calls let them get into our heads and they got several breaks in the second half to take the game 15-10.

That loss dropped us down into the third place bracket with another game against Claremont who had just beaten Arizona. They came out a heck of a lot more fired up than us and had a 4-man cup zone that they hadn't shown us the day before. We threw two callahans real early and they were up 5-0 before we had even turned around. We started punting the disc because we just couldn't for our lives work around their zone and we played some awesome D but it really just wasn't enough. It was really suprising that we couldn't work their zone since we've been such a great zone offense team all year, but for whatever reason, be it fatigue or mental fatigue or whatever, we just kept turning it over. They won the game 15-6 and went on to lose the UCSB in the third place game.

Everyone was pretty upset about that game, but I think the hard games we gave CU and UCSD really gave people something to be happy about when looking back on the weekend. A trip to nationals would have been sweet, but this is by far the best team Colorado State has ever had and we had one heck of a season.

So the series has begun. Sectionals is over. We're second in our section just like every single other year I've played with this team. We had an overall disappointing weekend for a lot of people. Saturday was at Air Force with 70mph gusts which made for some interesting ultimate. Let's just say we lost at least 70% of our discs to the wind. Our first game against CU was a total junky game. They just had the height and ups to come down with the few throws that managed to stay in bounds. We lost that one 11-3.

On Sunday we played CU again in the finals. We started off strong with a sweet D from Corey on the goal line against Beau, but just couldn't score despite getting more than one chance.

After that the O just couldn't seem to score at all against them and the next time I turned around it was 9-0. We played poorly. They got into our heads. We just didn't play fired up and couldn't play our game. They finished us off 13-2. Call it CU syndrome; we're most definitely afflicted. Our biggest goal right now is to not let our mental game problems overcome us at regionals and stick it to everyone we play there.

Fools Fest was an interesting tournament. Many of us didn't arrive at the fields (due to a visciuos car breakdown) until 5:30 on Saturday morning. Props to DA and Chad's cars for helping my brokedown posse out. So we get there at 5:30 and our first game is at 9 on alternate field sites against Iowa. We go there, we warm up and the lack of sleep is a non-factor. We roll 13-3. Next, we had like a three hour bye (field space issues I guess), and then had a game against USC (Southern California). At this point Jordan and I had to go to Topeka before the rental place closed to get a car to get back with, but rumor has it we beat them 13-0 with only like 3 or 4 turnovers the entire game. Finally we thought we'd be getting a good game out of Iowa state. They had a few CLX guys on their team still, but had just had a heck of a long game against Oklahoma and their standout players looked exhausted. I guess we were just a little too rested for them and we took the game 13-2.

Ok so now we've got a game against our buddies Oklahoma. They've lost a lot of guys and hadn't posted great results this season but they gave us a heck of a game. By this time it was turning into a bit of an upwind/downwind game and they managed to get up one or two upwind breaks and take half. Our zone was fairly ineffective against them with their two 6'6 guys breaking our cup left and right. In the second half we clamped down hard on our line calling with pretty much a ten man rotation going in. They couldn't handle the hard man D and started jacking it to one of their 6'6 almost every time. Corey Johnson D'd him up at least 4 times and despite being down 9-8, we ended up winning 11-9.

Sunday morning we were bumped up into the club division but it was a chaotic morning and we went into a game against some ex-mamabird guys and ringers from around Boulder with little fire to play. They got a couple of quick upwind breaks and ended up taking the game 9-7. Our last game was against another club team named Dingwop who we rolled.

Sectionals got moved to the 15-16th, but we've been practicing hard and are ready for our first shot at CU.

We didn't really expect to have any challenges going into this weekend. We were going to use RMI as a time to get people more play time and to give some of the aux players a chance to challenge starters for their starting spots. We did end up winning the tournament for the second year in a row, but we had a couple issues with slow starts and poor intensity which lead to some close games; notably our 11-10 victory over Utah on Saturday after being down 9-7 with the game about to be capped. They had a couple guys that played on persuader and some other talent, but they really were a 3 or 4 man team and our overall depth should have enveloped them like it ended up doing in the rematch we had with them in the finals, which we rolled 15-5.

Our only other close game came as a result of the 30-40mph winds that caused a severe upwind downwind game with Air Force in the semis. We switched our O line to play every upwind point, even if it was D, and the D/Aux players played all the downwind points. Props go out to everyone this game that played super hard with pretty much the same 14 players playing most of the game. Rambus for the most part ran the downwind offense with sweet hucks and unbeatable high releases.

Like I said previously we rolled the finals and every person on the team played a part in that game. We came out with a super strong zone both upwind and downwind that Utah just couldn't seem to get around. We're 26-6 now and we're fired up for next weekend in Kansas to try and win our first Fool's Fest championship.

Terminus was this past weekend and although we didn't produce the results we were hoping for, it wasn't all bad. We started Saturday with a game against Wake Forest where we came out flat and slow and let them stick with us until we won out 13-11. Our second game was against a very athletic Luther team that had just taken Wisconsin to the brink in a 13-12 game, but our chilly play and matching athelticism handled them easily, winning 13-6. We then had a bye going into our big game against the one seed in the tournament, Wisconsin. We didn't come out very strong against them with the offense making some key mistakes to let them slip ahead 7-3. The defense stepped it up in the second half and the offense found it's feet but we couldn't make up enough ground and ended up losing 13-9. Our final game on Saturday was against a fiery Pittsburgh team that we just didn't seem to have any gas left for. We were still calling pretty tight lines at this point and our legs seemed to give out us, losing 13-9.

Sunday we woke up early and got warmed up for our prequarters game against Michigan State. We came out strong on D forcing a couple turns on the first point, but poor decisions by the defensive handlers let them keep that first point. Despite a few offensive miscues we were only down a break at half 7-5, but we fell apart in the second half and they took the game 15-8. That put us out of contention for the championship but we still had a potential four games and a chance for a rematch with Pitt. Our next game was against the University of North Carolina. We opened up the line calling a lot to get fresh legs and intensity this game and it worked perfectly. They couldn't even come close to matching our fire, and we won easily 15-5. Our next game against Illinois was the same way, with us taking the game 15-6. Our last game of the tournament we got the rematch we wanted against Pitt and after clamping down on their main hucker with big flat marks from Mod and Big Dave, they crumbled in the second half. We finished 9th place in the tournament with that 11-8 win.

A lot of people are out enjoying the rest of our spring break but we're still really pumped up for RMI the weekend after we get back and Fool's Fest and sectionals shortly thereafter.

We're finally back to practicing on the IM fields here at school and it's never been better. The two weeks between Vegas and now were a jumble of cold, injuries and finding fields to practice with cleats on. Now that we've got our regular practice times again the team is fired up and looking good for Terminus. We've had a few injuries ranging from dislocated fingers to sprained ankles to knee problems, but everyone should be healed up and good to go for Georgia.

We went into Vegas grossly underseeded at 33rd and in the B division. Despite this we still had a shot to win the tournament, but it would require a perfect 10-0 tourney. Hib came up just short, posting a 9-1 record.

Saturday morning we rolled UCSD B, Rice and Syracuse. Our first game against an A division team came at the end of the day when we routed 17th ranked Las Positas 13-6.

Sunday morning we were in the quarter finals to make it into the top 16 for Monday. Our game was against 13th ranked Western Washington and we came out super flat. They were a decent team, but we drastically outmatched them athetically. They took a quick half 7-3 while we struggled to get our game together. Most of our turns were unforced errors and the defense line had some troubles stopping their breakmark offense. We pulled together our game in the second half but it was already a bit late and WW took a strategic timeout to push the game to cap. We lost 12-11 and this put us out of contention for the championship bracket.

The highest we could now finish was 17th.Our next three games we stomped Chicago, Ohio State and Las Positas again to leave us with two games on Monday to win our bracket.

We came out sluggish as usual on Monday and let Claremont take an early lead 7-4, but we picked up our heads this time and won 12-11. We then rolled Harvard 10-8 in the finals.

With the exception of the first half of the game with Western Washington it was a great weekend and the rookies stepped it up big time on defense. Our next tournament is Terminus in March.

In probably the most competetive tournament we've ever played in outside of the series Hib cruised to a sweet 5th place. We went 3-1 on day one with our only loss coming into top ranked Stanford. We played them hard but we had trouble on defense and they beat us 12-9. Our last game of the day was against Claremont and we cruised to an easy 13-6 victory against them. We lost to Santa Barbara in quarters on Sunday 15-11 then beat Humboldt and San Diego to take 5th place. We're pretty excited about the results, but there's still plenty of stuff to work on from the weekend and we're trying to cram a lot of things in before Vegas in two weeks.

And for everyone who's curious about our MVP for the weekend, we've decided to discontinue the Hibida MVP award. The skull will still travel with us, but this year we're all about the team and everyone played awesome this particular weekend.

On a technical note I've archived our news and tournament results from previous seasons.

Tryouts are over and we were very happy with the turn out and the level of play. Everyone played hard and although deciding the A and B teams was difficult everyone definitely earned their spot.

The A-team is gearing up for Santa Barbara this weekend and the B-team is having its informational meeting Wednesday the 25th in the Rec Center lounge (right up the stairs when you walk in) at 5:30pm. Everyone who wasn't at tryouts or didn't make the A-team is welcome to attend and see what Coach B has to say about the goals for the B-team this year.

Tryouts!

When? Saturday and Sunday the 14th and 15th of January. Warmups will begin at 9am on both days.

Where? City Park North

How do I get there? If you're coming from campus take Shields north for maybe 1/4 of a mile. Turn left on Mulberry. On your right after a block or two City park will start (it's a big park) Take a right on Jackson and take it up to the north end of the park (3ish blocks). We'll be holding tryouts on the fields that are maybe a block west of the intersection of Oak and Jackson. Look for flying discs!

What should I bring? Bring cleats, water, a light, a dark, warm enough clothing for the weather and a filled out tryout sheet (and your A-game of course). If you forget your tryout sheet I'll have pens and hard copies at the fields but please TRY and do it beforehand. Also bring some kind of snack for yourself for lunch. We'll be taking a short break for lunch and if you didn't bring anything you're out of luck.

When are we done? We'll be done late afternoon on Saturday and a similar time on Sunday so yes, you can watch the Broncos own up on the Patriots.

When are you going to announce the decided teams? We should have the teams figured out by the middle of the week, but much more likely sooner as we have mini-camp and Santa Barbara coming right up.

If you're going to be late and you know it, YOU MUST let one of the captains know your situation BEFOREHAND. You can email me from the "contact us" link on the left to let me know what's up.

See all you guys out there.

The fall is winding down and we only have two indoor practices left. Everyone's pumped up for the spring and our rigorous tournament schedule which starts two weeks after we get back into school with the Santa Barbara Invite.

I've put up our tryout sheet to download if you're going to be attending tryouts on January 14th and 15th. Every single person attending needs to either get a hard copy of this from me or download it and print it off.

While I was off galavanting in Sarasota the rookies had a pretty decent weekend at Rookie Nookie ending up 3-4 with losses to both CU teams and a nail-biter against Colorado College. The majority of all the players were rookies everyone's pretty happy with how the weekend turned out. Mike came home with the MVP for the weekend.

As soon as I get some formatting issues worked out I'll put up the downloadable tryout question sheet that everyone needs to fillout before we do tryouts in January.

Two more weeks on the IM fields.

10/18

After only getting one bid to "Just Plain Nasty" in Norman Oklahoma we rolled down there on Friday with a big squad of twenty three. We were seeded fifth overall going into the tournament behind a couple club teams, North Texas and Arkansas. In our first pool play game against Harding we came out a little slow but ended up pulling out a 12-10 win at hard cap. The next round we had a bye and, since Mizzouri didn't show up, another bye, going into our game against the one seed in our pool, Arkansas.

Arkansas didn't know what to do what we hit them with our aggro D and we quickly jumped ahead 5-0. There were 4-5 layouts every point and they just didn't have the personnel to answer our huge play. We ended up finishing the game off 13-7. Our last game of the day was against a high school team from Tulsa that we rolled 13-1.

Winning our pool got us a first round bye on Sunday and we came into our quarterfinals game against SMSU fired up and quickly rolled the game 13-7. Semis was against the one seed in the tournament, a club team team from Austin. The wind was picking up by this point but we played a tight game and overcame their trap zone to take the game 13-10. Finals was against another club team, Freebird, who had a couple of superstars but just couldn't match up with our overall athleticism. We took half on them 8-4, then gave up a few in the row in the second half, but pulled away to win at 15-11.

Everyone played absolutely awesome this weekend especially the rookies. Ford and Corey Johnson tied for MVP honors and Sam took home the "scored the most ladies at the party" honors. Props go out to Coop for keeping stats for us the whole weekend and Joe-Joe for doing sweet filming for us. The Belles also had a great showing losing in their finals to Fluffy Kitten.

Dare I say it again this year? CSU is a force in everything that is disc.

Our practice fields have been moved to accomdate our numbers. We're now practicing on the fields next the tennis courts behind the rec center.

Our fall is off and running with 50+ people at our first couple practices. We're looking as strong as ever this year with club sectionals coming up for the Vets at the end of September.

Most sections of the page are updated for the new year so check some stuff out.

I never updated the results of regionals last May, as we had one of the most disappointing endings to our season possible. The results are now up, but they aren't very encouraging.

Other than that we're interested in having anyone interested coming out to play for the next couple weeks and get to the know the team.

The new season is just about here and we're all about the recruiting here at Hib Central!

Our informational meeting for new players is at 7pm Monday, August 29th in the Rec center. As in years past, this year it is in Multi-purpose room east on the 2nd floor.

Our new practice times will be up within a few days so for now ignore the old practice times that are on the page and I'll get the new ones posted ASAP.

If any new players miss the info meeting then just come on out to practice with cleats, a white and a dark and introduce yourself. We practice on the IM fields and I believe it will be Monday, Wednesday and Thursday this year.
