Lots of news since it's been a long time and several tournaments since the last update. The timeline is in sort of descending order, so check farther down for info on Georgia and RMI.

Sectionals

Everyone was really pumped up going into this weekend of sectionals. We hadn't gotten a chance to play CU's A team yet this season and after our various tournament victories throughout the year we figured we'd be able to give them a good game.

We spent the night at Zwick's and Coop's houses in Louisville and Boulder respectively, then got up on Saturday morning with a serious fire to play CU. It turns out we should have focused a bit more on our other games as we came out rather flat and in our first game Air Force took us right to brink, although we pulled out the victory 12-11. Our game against Mines went a little better. They put up a good fight but we ended up taking the game 13-9. Our next two games were CU-B and then our long awaited game against CU-A. CU's B team was definitely solid and they played hard against us, turning several points in the first half into 15 and 20 minute marathons; doing a good job of tiring us out. In the second half we clamped down on their hucking game with a strong zone, and ended up pulling away to a 12-5 victory.

CU-A was a different matter entirely. They pulled to us and we scored the first point of the game on a sweet huck from Chad to Brett. We then pulled to them and they threw a huck out the back of the endzone for the turn. The game went up and down like that for awhile, with us never really being able to play effective enough D to stop their awesome underneath game. After several hard points it was 4-3 them, but some disappointing drops and throwaways on our part let them steal away and take half 7-3. They came out strong in the second half and the wind had died down a bit helping them to score two more points before we were able to get our offense together. The game ended 13-6, but everyone was very happy with how we played. There's a reason CU is one of the top teams in the country, and although they played great, a lot of the mistakes we made were unforced errors and we're confident we can clean that up going into regionals.

We had a final game after CU against Colorado College, and by then the wind was very strong and it was pretty much an downwind punt game. We managed to score a couple upwinders and took the game 11-8. Overall, it was a very fun day and we overcame some early shakiness to finish out 4-1 and second in our section. Brett took home the skull for sectionals with a lot of sweet Ds and some extremely chilly play. We're going to spend the next month getting our fundamentals down and working on the smoothness of our game. It's time to break apart the holy trinity in the Southwest.

RMI

We had extensive planning going for RMI for weeks, including a fancy booklet, a booth from Burt's Shirts, and plenty of good competition. Even though we were crunched for time as the weekend rolled around, and weather threatened, everything went off without a hitch. We ended up going undeafeated overall and beating a suprisingly good Wisconsin B team in the finals to take the tournament. Overall, everyone had a good time and it was great to see teams all the way from the Oregon and Texas come out for some sweet Colorado ultimate.

Nicky P. won MVP for RMI with awesome offensive play and sweet D, including a barrage of footblocks.

Georgia

We went down to Georgia over spring break for some fun in the sun and some good ultimate. The sun wasn't really shining but we had a good time at high tide. Wednesday was rained out so they pushed the tournament back a day to include Friday. We lost one game in pool play to Indiana, then swept the power pool to end up as the number two seed overall going into the elimination rounds. We then proceeded to beat out Rutgers and Skidmore for a chance to play Iowa state in the finals. They were a strong team, but they only had ten people and we won the tournament handily, 15-7. By unanimous consensus this was the best Hibida has played in a tournament all year and everyone had a great time and enjoyed the victory.

Grats to Chad P. for taking home a very well deserved MVP for this tournament.

Right after High Tide we drove 60 miles north to Statesboro to play in Southerns. It was a good tournament, well organized, although the fields were a bit small. We did alright in pool play, losing only one game to Chico State and ending up 3-1 for the day. However, by this time we had Joey, Bus, Joe-Joe and a couple others in some stage of injury, and everyone else was pretty tired from the four straight days of ultimate we had just finished. We played Chad's old team from Oregon State in pre-quarters on Sunday and didn't put up much of a fight as they beat us 13-5. We had a consolation game against Middlebury slated, but in the end we were all too tired and we headed home.

Grats to Zwick for taking home MVP honors at Southerns.

See the results page for what happened at President's day if you really care. It was fairly saddening, but we did play some sick off-handed beach ultimate.

Well, Spring season has started and we're out there playing again. People have come out of Christmas break a little sluggish but we'll be confident heading into President's day in a couple of weeks.

Practice times and tournament dates have been updated for spring so check that out. An RMI page will also be up soon.

Also, if you're interested in donating to Hibida for any reason you can check out our updated fundraising section.

To complete Hibida's fall season we went to first year tournament in McPherson, Kansas. We camped out in the cold for the first time this year, but that didn't affect our play one bit. We took the tournament handily, going 6-0 with our only close game coming in the semi-finals against Wichita State.

Oh and by the way, Zach won MVP again.

What a fall season we've had, tournament after tournament; all with awesome results. Our record for season ended up being 36-12. Let's take this momentum into the spring season and show the ultimate community that CU isn't the only power team to come out of Colorado this year.

Overall, we had a very successful Saturday in Greeley. We went in figuring there wouldn't be much competition, and the midday barbeque was suspect, but all the teams played well and everyone had a blast. Colorado College gave us a hell of a game, but we pulled it together in the second half to win 11-9.

I'm going to take a little time out from the general news to convey a moment of pure joy. Against UNC Rambus catches the disc on an in-cut. As we did all day I ran up for the bump and he threw it to me. Joey, meanwhile, is making a hard out cut as he knows I have an open backhand. He sees someone else going deep so he cuts in so hard that the disc was in his hands before his defender even figured out that he was still running the wrong way. Ah, pure bliss.

Anyway, everyone played really well and we got a chance to work on different forces and zone. Jordan showed off his huge ups, and Rambus kicked some serious ass coming away with the MVP for the tournament. We're going to take this momentum into Kansas next weekend and end the fall season on a high note.

We rolled into Oklahoma at 11pm Friday night with 19 people. Come Saturday night Hibida was 7-1 in pool play between the two teams we fielded and reeling from all the sick ultimate we played all day.

Team Destructicon started Saturday off with an extremely tough game against Texas A. We pulled off a 13-12 victory at universe point, overcoming their serious shut down of our H-stack. Our next game was against Kansas which we came back from a 7-3 half to go up 11-9, game to twelve. We ended up losing 12-11 despite Corey getting a real shady foul called on what would have been the game winning catch. We rolled our next two games against Nebraska and Tulsa.

Team Where's Donnie had a very strong showing downing their first three opponents easily, then playing a sweet game versus Arkansas for the one-seed spot in their pool for Sunday. Can anyone say hattrick Zwick?

Sunday, the Bundles of sticks slept in a few extra minutes while Destruticon ran through Rice in the pre-quarters. Both our teams then proceeded to lose to North Texas and Texas B respectively in the quarters. A heartbreaker for sure, but Sunday is a tough day when you play all weekend with two subs.

We finished the tourney with a fun chumpionship game against a combined OU team where we got to field some sweet rookie lines and relax a bit from all the serious play.

Props to everyone for toughing out the weekend and finishing awesome. Congratulations to Zach and Joey who tied for MVP for Destructicon and to Zwickl for his MVP showing on the Bundles. Also congrats to our women's team who went 5-0 on Saturday then lost to Oklahoma in the finals on Sunday. CSU is a force in all that is disc.

After one of the sweetest weekends of ultimate in recent history Hibida came away with its first home tournament victory ever! We fielded two teams for "Rookie Nookie" this year and Team Destructicon led by Tim and Joey won out a viscious game against CU in the finals for the win. Team Donnie Sucks, led by Donnie (for Saturday at least) and Coop, also played sweet all weekend losing in the semis to Destructicon after wiping the other CU team out of contention in the quarters.

Props go out to Zach Attack for not only running the entire tournament but for winning the Destructicon team MVP with a sick performance in the finals. Joe-Joe picked up the mvp award for Donnie Sucks with hot play all weekend.

This was an amazing time to see our rookies develop even more and to show how much depth Hibida has this year. This momentum will carry us into a sweet showing at Oklahoma next weekend.

Another year in Logan and another victory... well almost. Despite a bad showing in the finals we played well the rest of the weekend and the rookies showed that they're all going to be big players when the times comes and they get their throws down.

We ended up placing second to a pretty kick ass Boise State team. They played a hard game in the finals and we just didn't play the first half strong enough to stick with them. We pulled it together in the second half, scoring three in a row on them and forcing a time out, but in the end they finished the job 15-6.

Congratulations to D.A. on a well deserved MVP victory.

After finishing our first tournament of the season Hib is looking very promising this year. We had a slow start against Mines, losing 15-12, but after that we rallied to win the rest of our games. Including beating all three CU teams. Our final record was 4-1 with our non-CU victory coming against a young, but good-spirited UNC team.

Our rookies played awesome. There was a point against CU that Shannan handblocked Zed not once, but twice! National champs? Ok, maybe they were playing 90% rookies, but still... Anyway, Jon, Coit and Jordan had some sweet Ds and Andrew and David also both played hard, so props to all the new guys.

After the MVP votes were tabulated Joey "The Callahan Kid" Griggs(who incidentally added another to his total against CU) and Shannan shared the honor and will rosham or something for possesion of the coveted Hibida Skull. Check them and the skull out in our new MVP section.

Full stories and trash-talk will be at Edora tomorrow (Monday) for our casual post-tourney practice (4:00pm).

The fall season is upon us and we've already been practicing for weeks! This year's team is looking great with it's core of vets from last year and the new recruits.

Our first tournament of the year will be club sectionals in Northglenn on September 19th.

If you're interesting in coming out and checking out the team you can find practice times/locations on the left or go scope out the forums for all things Hib.
