"Climate Change, Climate Change Assessments, and Climate Policy"

Abstract: Over the last 20 years, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has conducted a series of assessments on the science and impacts of climate change, and on strategies for managing it. The reports of the IPCC have played a central role in communicating the scientific consensus on climate change to governments and the public. Still, much of the public has an incomplete or incorrect view of the status of the science and of the messages in the IPCC assessments. Insight into the goals and processes of the IPCC, as well as of other entities that have conducted assessments of the scientific literature, can help both scientists and non-scientists appreciate the nature of the scientific knowledge on climate change, including the uncertainties and their implications. As the evidence on the nature and consequences of climate change becomes clearer and clearer, the need for accurate information on physical, biological, social, economic, and cultural effects becomes greater and greater. IPCC can contribute some, but not all of the necessary knowledge.
