  4. Commanded 4th Brigade, 1st Division, I Corps, Army of the Potomac from 26 November to 13 December 1861 and 1 March to 16 June 1863.
  5. Commanded the Iron Brigade from 16 June until he was wounded at Gettysburg on 2 July, 1863.
  6. Commanded 1st Division, I Corps, Army of the Potomac from 27 February to 1 March 1863.
  7. Commanded the District of Western Kentucky from 11 September 1864 to 24 August 1865.
  8. Breveted Major General, USV on 14 August 1865.
  9. Mustered out 24 May 1865.
