Attended West Point, class on 1848, finished 16 of 38.
Service record:
- Frontier duty before the war
- Utah Expedition, promoted to Major
- Staff Assistant Inspector General, beginning 12 Nov. 1861
- Promoted to Brigadier General
- Major General Pope's staff
- Cavarly Brigade during 2nd Bull Run campaign (wounded)
- General McClellan's Chief of Cavalry during the Maryland Campaign
- Returned to command, commanding a brigade then a division. Fought at:
- Fredericksburg
- Stoneman's raid
- Beverly Ford
- Aldie
- Middleburg
- Upperville
- Gettysburg, held McPherson's Ridge again Heth's Division until relieved by I Corps, then covered the flanks of the army
- Promoted to Major General after his death to date from 1 July 1863.
