Welcome! I am an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychology at Colorado State University, as well as the Associate Chair of the Department. I have been at CSU since completing my Ph.D. in Cognitive Psychology at Purdue University, where I worked under the mentorship of Jerry Busemeyer, Mark McDaniel, and Jim Nairne.

My specialization is in the area of human learning and memory. The focus of my research program is on basic encoding and retrieval processes, including the processes whereby retrieval enhances subsequent memory. The memory phenomena I am currently studying include the testing effect, generation effect, spacing effect, and word frequency effect. Much of this work focuses on topics with implications for learning and memory in educational settings. I am also interested in aging and memory, including effects of physical fitness on age-related declines in memory, a topic that brings together my professional and personal interests (as someone who enjoys running and cycling in my spare time, and competes in running events, duathlons, and triathlons). For more information about my research interests and recent work, go here.

My teaching is also in the area of learning and memory. At the undergraduate level, I teach PSY352 Learning and Memory and PSY452 Cognitive Psychology, and during the summers I sometimes co-teach PSY252 Mind, Brain, & Behavior. At the graduate level, I’ve taught PSY600F Human Learning and Memory, as well as a variety of graduate seminars (e.g., Current Topics in Human Memory, Reconstructive Processes in Memory, Aging and Memory). For current and recent syllabi, go here.

During the summer, I serve as director of our Summer Program on Mind and Brain.  This program is sponsored by the National Science Foundation (NSF) Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) Program. Go here for more information.
