Welcome! I am an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychology at Colorado State University, as well as the Associate Chair of the Department. I have been at CSU since completing my Ph.D. at Purdue University, where I worked under the mentorship of Jerry Busemeyer, Mark McDaniel, and Jim Nairne.

My specialization is in the area of human learning and memory. The focus of my research program is on basic encoding and retrieval processes, including the processes whereby retrieval enhances subsequent memory. The memory phenomena I am currently studying include the testing effect, generation effect, spacing effect, and word frequency effect. Much of this work focuses on topics with implications for learning and memory in educational settings. I am also interested in these and other topics as related to healthy aging. For more information about my research interests and recent work, go here.

My teaching is also in the area of learning and memory. At the undergraduate level, I currently teach PSY 352 Learning and Memory each semester, and during the summers I sometimes teach/co-teach PSY 252 Mind, Brain, & Behavior or PSY 452 Cognitive Psychology. At the graduate level, I’ve taught our core course, PSY600F Human Learning and Memory, as well as a variety of graduate seminars (e.g., Current Topics in Human Memory, Reconstructive Processes in Memory, Aging and Memory). For current and recent syllabi, go here.

During the summer, I serve as director of our Summer Program on Mind and Brain.  This program is sponsored by the National Science Foundation (NSF) Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) Program, and the Department of Defense Awards to Stimulate and Support Undergraduate Research Experiences (ASSURE) Program (NSF Grant SES-0552876 to Edward L. DeLosh). Go here for more information.

Finally, as the current Associate Chair of the Department, one of my primary responsibilities is to serve as Director of Undergraduate Studies. We’re doing some great things in our undergraduate curriculum, providing students specialized training on state-of-the-art equipment in our undergraduate laboratory courses, and now offering an undergraduate concentration in Mind, Brain, & Behavior. Check out the Department’s Current Students page for additional information, and stay tuned, there’s much more to come!
