U.S.
Forest Service
The
U.S. Forest Service, a branch of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, oversees
the management of approximately 10,000 acres or 26% of the Winiger Ridge
landscape. Overall forest health, wildfire mitigation, recreation management,
noxious weed monitoring and control and wildlife habitat improvement are
the key issues being addressed on National Forest Lands within the project
area. This project received special stewardship contracting authorities
and funding in 1998 and is one of 28 reinvention pilot projects
funded nationally. The new Forest Service office is located at U.S. Highway
36 at Yarmouth just north of Boulder. Christine Walsh is the Boulder district
ranger. Amy Krommes is the district's Winiger project leader.
