Private Landowners

More than 11,000 acres, or roughly 29 percent of the Winiger Ridge Project area, is held by private landowners. Ownership includes mountain subdivisions of various lot sizes, small ranchettes of 60 acres or less and patented mining claims for a total human population of about 2,500 people.

With so much of the land held in private ownership, a landscape-based project simply cannot be successful without the continued and expanded cooperation of these private citizens. Already, there has been significant work done on private lands with the assistance of land-management agencies, including:

• CSFS has provided technical assistance to 38 landowners, completed five stewardship plans and completed thinning and wildfire mitigation on 27 acres of private lands.
• Cherryvale Fire District has conducted defensible space work on around 37 homes.

We hope this web site will help serve private landowners interested in the ecosystem restoration process. In addition, we would appreciate hearing about activities aiding indigenous (native) species or wildfire hazard reduction efforts.
