Fire Protection Districts
Fire Protection Districts are tax supported entities that provide fire protection and emergency response activities to the citizens within their districts. There are approximately 15 FPD's that serve the mountainous area of Boulder County and 5 within the project area. They are primarily staffed with volunteers who are on 24 hour call to respond to fires, medical, search and rescue or other emergency situations.
The Winiger Ridge Project area contains the following FPD's Cherryvale High Country Coal Creek Nederland Sugar Loaf In addition to providing emergency response to its citizens, FPD's assist with education and provide technical and operational support to the project.
The
Cherryvale FPD is particularly involved with this effort. Chief Mike Tombolato
serves on the Administrative Team of the Boulder County Ecosystem Cooperative
and has provided administrative, operational and financial support to the project.
Cherryvale was the first and is only one of two FPD's in Boulder County that
has a dedicated wildfire mitigation crew. This crew conducts defensible space
and wildfire mitigation activities upon request by the citizens within the Cherryvale
District boundaries. Matt Wood is the department's wildland fire coordinator.
