Nominating a Speaker
Graduate students in the departments of Natural Sciences, Natural Resources, Agricultural Science, and Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences typically nominate speakers. However, we encourage nominations from undergraduate students as well. We take nominations for any scientist within the United States. Nominations for scientists from other North American countries will be considered if reasonable airfare can be obtained. We encourage nominations for scientists from local institutions such as CSU, UW, UC Boulder, UC Denver, or UNC (i.e., a "local" speaker is anyone who will not require airfare to Fort Collins). Each graduate student can nominate up to two speakers per year.
Several students have asked whether they should contact the speakers before nominating them. You may certainly get in touch with the speaker to tell him what you are doing. However, there is no real need for prior contact. In the early summer, the Colloquium President will send a formal invitation to each nominated speaker. The invitation will allow the speaker to accept or decline the nomination and suggest dates that suits his or her schedule. The President will then coordinate the schedules of all 25 speakers so that each is invited for a date that suits him or her. Therefore, if you do contact a speaker, do not bother to narrow down dates.
TO NOMINATE A SPEAKER...
Send an email to the Colloquium President (colloq@lamar.colostate.edu) with:
- Your name, department, email, and phone number
- The speakers name, institutional affiliation, research focus, email address, phone number, and postal address
If you nominate a speaker, there is a good chance we will invite him or her. We typically get about as many nominations as there are Mondays in the school year.
