Conceptual Design and Design Development

For the remainder of the semester we will focus on your new design proposal for a specific site.

The next couple of weeks will be spent to reach an appropriate design solution for the entire study area (as defined in class) - assume that the existing organization has been considered to be outdated and that the space is in need of a new and fresh composition. Each of you have the opportunity to apply design process and reach an ideal solution for the space. We will refer to the process, and the product, as Schematic or Conceptual Design.

The Design Development phase expands on the level of detail that the Schematic or Conceptual Design phase expresses in a design project. Through the use of drawings, and occasionally models the design proposal is refined. Design development drawings may be plan, section, elevation, perspective, axonometric, etc., and are used to clearly illustrate the design intentions to a high level of detail. Drawings are typically reviewed by the client, and are often accompanied by an estimate of the associated construction costs. The design development phase helps to clarify the design scheme (for both client and designer) to take the project into the Construction Drawing phase.

Required products:

-Design development model as specified in class (scale: 1" = 8') to a high level of detail and accuracy with the following information in written and graphic form:

1.Design development model. Scale - 1" = 8'-0". Construct on a plywood base - 1/2"x18"x12".

2. Special features - (2) elevation views through complex elements, 1" = 8'-0". Dry-mount on 11"x17" foamcore board/s; landscape orientation; title, date, etc. on bottom.

3. Tear sheets (product information) providing real representation of materials, textures, colors, fixtures, etc. for ALL site elements and surfaces. May include preliminary construction details. Dry-mount on 24"x36" foamcore board.
