Hear me when I call, O God of my righteousness; You gave room to me in trouble; have mercy on me, and hear my prayer. O sons of men, how long will you turn My glory into shame? Will you love vanity and seek after a lie? Selah. But know that Jehovah has set apart the godly for Himself. Jehovah hears when I call to Him. Tremble, and sin not; speak within your own heart on your bed and be still. Selah. Offer the sacrifices of righteousness, and trust in Jehovah. There are many who say, Who will show us any good? Jehovah, lift up the light of Your face on us. You have put gladness in my heart, more than in the time that their grain and their wine increased. I will lie down, both in peace and in sleep. For You alone, Jehovah, make me dwell in safety. Psalms 4:1-8 MKJV Here the Psalmist recites an amazing promise. God through him promises to hear our prayers, draw near to us, bring us gladness and peace beyond compare. And how do we know this? For He alone "make us dwell in safety." He can be trusted with our life and He knows how to bring us greater joy and peace than we can imaging. Wait on the LORD: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the LORD. Posted May 13, 2009 at 10:10 PM Ryan Trott, Webmaster May 7, 2009Devotional ThoughtIn Numbers 21:6-9 the following story upfold: And the LORD sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people; and much people of Israel died. Therefore the people came to Moses, and said, We have sinned, for we have spoken against the LORD, and against thee; pray unto the LORD, that he take away the serpents from us. And Moses prayed for the people. And the LORD said unto Moses, Make thee a fiery serpent, and set it upon a pole: and it shall come to pass, that every one that is bitten, when he looketh upon it, shall live. And Moses made a serpent of brass, and put it upon a pole, and it came to pass, that if a serpent had bitten any man, when he beheld the serpent of brass, he lived. Shortly after God led Israel in battle and utterly destroyed King Arad of the Canaanites and his cities, Israel started grumbling again against God. The plague that resulted was one of poisonous serpents infiltrating the camp. May Israelites died from the snakes. When they prayed to God for help He did something rather strange, He commanded Moses to mold a snake and put in on a pole. Why in the world would He do that? It seems kind of silly to look at a snake on a pole to be saved from a snake's bite. Wouldn't it have been better to just get rid of the snakes? Or better yet, make the people all immune to the snake's poison. Why didn't God do that? We are bitten daily by sin. We are constantly attacked by the devil and his forces which are bent on our destruction. Why doesn't God just make us immune to the poison of that old serpent the devil? Why not just get rid of him all together? The poison of sin and self-rule must be taken out of us. God does not want us to live any longer in it but to live the more abundant life. We must look to our savior Jesus Christ so the poison can be removed from us. He is the only antidote that will remove the poison completely. And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up: That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life. John 3:14-15 And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me. John 12:32 This Week's Events and Activities- This week will feature our next Agape meeting this Friday, May 8, 2009 starting at 7:00 PM in room 210 of the Lory Student Center on the CSU campus. Posted May 7, 2009 at 10:20 AM Ryan Trott, Webmaster April 29, 2009Devotional ThoughtListen to these words of Jesus as He prayed after the last supper and just before entering into the Garden of Gethsemane to commit himself to the path that He was given by God. Listen to the utter love and care for us and for his Father that exudes from his words. "I pray for them: I pray not for the world, but for them which thou hast given me; for they are thine. And all mine are thine, and thine are mine; and I am glorified in them. And now I am no more in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to thee. Holy Father, keep through thine own name those whom thou hast given me, that they may be one, as we are. While I was with them in the world, I kept them in thy name: those that thou gavest me I have kept, and none of them is lost, but the son of perdition; that the scripture might be fulfilled. And now come I to thee; and these things I speak in the world, that they might have my joy fulfilled in themselves. I have given them thy word; and the world hath hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil. They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth. As thou hast sent me into the world, even so have I also sent them into the world. And for their sakes I sanctify myself, that they also might be sanctified through the truth. Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word; That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me. And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one: I in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one; and that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them, as thou hast loved me." the same time, saith the LORD, will I be the God of all the families of Israel,
and they shall be my people. Thus saith the LORD, The people which were left of
the sword found grace in the wilderness; even Israel, when I went to cause him
to rest. The LORD hath appeared of old unto me, saying, Yea, I have loved thee
with an everlasting love: therefore with loving kindness have I drawn thee. God took the Israelites out of bondage as slaves in Egypt. He brought them out with a mighty hand. He saved them from the mightiest army on earth at the time by a miracle at the Red Sea. However, the people rebelled against him. God offered grace to the people, but many chose not to receive it and died as a result. Even so God drew them to him with his loving kindness. Let it be a reminder to us to remember the love of our God and not treat it with disdain. " And having said this, He breathed His last." ~ Luke 23:44-46. NKJV. Today, take a minute to contemplate Christ's infinite sacrifice for you. He gave up everything for you and took upon Himself your sin, your shame, your just reward. He allowed Himself to be treated in the most inhumane of ways, to have hurled at Him the most cruel insults. And still He showed love - because He love you. For I bear them witness that they have a zeal for God, but not according to knowledge. For they being ignorant of God's righteousness, and seeking to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted to the righteousness of God." ~ Romans 10:1-3. NKJV. The Jews of Israel thought that they had righteousness down pat - they were "it" when it came to righteousness. But they were actually destitute - completely ignorant of the kind of righteousness that counts. Do we also do this? Humans place a great emphasis on doing the right thing - but is it possible that we have missed the point? Don't get me wrong - it's still important to do the right thing! But if we rely on that instead of the merits of Christ, we have also missed the boat. Let's give up on our righteousness and submit to Christ's righteousness. Again, when I say to the wicked, 'You shall surely die,' if he turns from his sin and does what is lawful and right, if the wicked restores the pledge, gives back what he has stolen, and walks in the statutes of life without committing iniquity, he shall surely live; he shall not die." ~ Ezekiel 33:13-16. NKJV. As humans, it's all too easy for us to classify people as either "good" or "bad". And most of the time, we tend to think of ourselves as the "good" type. According to a recent survey, only 5% of the population believes they are going to hell. Interesting to say the least! Many people try to be "good" thinking that this is what God wants, and that if they can just be good enough, all will be well with them. But this is faulty thinking - the only way that any of us can be saved is through Christ's righteousness. Trusting in our own righteousness is futile, and in fact, dangerous, because it distracts us from the only source of true righteousness - in Christ. The only true good that we can do is if Christ works in us to do His good pleasure - and for that to happen, we have to totally surrender to Him - everything. Only when we let Him take the reigns can He lead us in the paths that He has for us. Let him show by good conduct that his works are done in the meekness of wisdom. But if you have bitter envy and self-seeking in your hearts, do not boast and lie against the truth. This wisdom does not descend from above, but is earthly, sensual, demonic. For where envy and self-seeking exist, confusion and every evil thing will be there. But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality and without hypocrisy. Posted February 26, 2009 at 10:01 AM Jonathan Vigh, ACF Secretary and co-Webmaster February 19, 2009Devotional Thought"But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law. And those who are Christ's have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit." ~ Galatians 5:22-25. NKJV. The Bible tells us not to judge. But have you ever though of becoming a fruit-inspector? No, I don't mean checking the fruits of those around you - but your own fruit? Do you have joy, and peace in your life? Does love abound in your relationships? Are you longsuffering with the people who get on your nerves? Do you show kindness to others, both to your friends and your enemies? Do goodness and faithfulness show up throughout your life (not just when you're in church)? Do you exercise self-control? Are you gentle with people and with yourself? These are good questions. If we don't see these fruits in ourselves, there's a problem. But the solution is not to try harder to produce fruit - the solution is to get connected to the Vine. If we are in Christ, and He is in us, the fruit will be a natural outgrowth of our connection to Him. If we walk in the Spirit, these fruits will be in our lives. Interestingly, we do have a role to play - to crucify the flesh. We do this by exercising our will - the power of choice that God has equipped us with. If we choose to give up on ourselves and surrender completely to Him, He will come into our hearts and work His way with us - and we will be fruitful. Friend, have you surrendered completely to God today? If not, why don't you choose to do so today? This Week's Events and Activities- There will be no Agape this week. Everyone that thirsts, come to the waters; and you who have no money, come, buy and eat. Yes, come, buy wine and milk without money and without price. Why do you spend money for what is not bread, and your wages for what does not satisfy? Listen diligently to Me, and eat what is good, and let your soul delight itself in abundance. Incline your ear, and come to Me. Hear, and your soul shall live; and I will make an everlasting covenant with you -- the sure mercies of David. . . . Seek the Lord while He may be found. Call upon Him while He is near. Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts. Let him return to the Lord, and He will have mercy on him; and to our God, for He will abundantly pardon." ~ Isaiah 55:1-3, 6-7 NKJV Did you know that 2500 years ago, during the reign of King Nebuchadnezzar, an ounce of gold was worth about 350 loaves of bread? You may be surprised that today, an ounce of gold is still worth about 350 loaves of bread (1 troy oz Gold = $951.80 => a loaf of bread for $2.71, which is about right). Well, this relationship doesn't always hold so well since gold fluctuates quite a bit more than the price of bread (and we don't really know what a Babylonian ounce was compared to today's ounce). But it is interesting that gold seems to hold its value over the very long term. Gold is getting very popular with investors these days as a safehaven as the financial crisis takes hold and the world may slip into a depression. But God counsels us to focus on higher things - to eat the Bread of life. If we seek after Him, we will not disappointed, even if our earthly money becomes worthless. Let's do this today! ACF Starts Agape, a new Bible-focused program which will meet on Friday nightsAs students who are passionate about Jesus' love, we have a vision of sharing our adventures with God with our fellow classmates and friends on the CSU campus. We recognize that the long-standing Friday Night Fellowship (FNF) group (which meets in homes around the area every Friday night, with a home-cooked meal and Bible study) has been a wonderful ministry to collegiates and young adults alike, but it has been difficult to reach out to the CSU community due to the changing locations off campus. We feel God has called us to bring a similar type of fellowship as exists with FNF directly onto the CSU campus where it will be highly accessible. So, ACF has voted to create a new Friday Night program. Our vision is to share the Bible and gospel message with our fellow classmates whether they have accepted Jesus as their Savior or not. In fellowship, we will speak the truth of God. We have named this mission Agape, love, as our motivation and goal. While there will be no physical food, we will be breaking God's bread - the bread of life. Each Agape will feature singing, prayer, and a study from the Word on topics highly relevant to students. We would like the study to be interactive - this is not just for religious people - but opening the Bible for all, whereever each person is at in their life. All are welcome (including nonstudents!) - come join us in room 210 of the Lory Student Center on most Fridays from 7-8 pm. Parking in the main lot north of the Lory Student Center is free after 4 PM on Fridays. Friday Night Fellowship will still continue one weekend per month. The next Friday Night Fellowship will be February 20, 2009. We recognize that there is great value in the home-setting, and we hope that our on-campus presence will afford us the opportunity to invite CSU students to partake in Friday Night Fellowship each month. This Week's Events and Activities- Agape will have it's first meeting this Friday, February 13, 2009 from 7-8 PM in room 210 of the Lory Student Center. Rest in the Lord and wait patiently for Him; do not fret because of Him who prospers in his way, because of the man who brings wicked schemes to pass. Cease from anger, and forsake wrath; do not fret, it only causes harm." ~ Psalm 37:1, 3-8 NKJVAll to often, it is easy for us to think that we need to stand up for our rights, to fight against the injustices which have been done to us. But God promises that He will take care of it - justice is His perogative. Our job is to trust in Him, to rest in Him. He is our Righteousness. When His robe is around us, nothing can touch us, except that He permits - our job is to stay connected to Him through faith. In the end, all will be made clear and justice will be served. Those who have put their faith in Jesus and stayed connected to Him have nothing to fear - they can look forward to an eternity of happiness! So don't fret the small (or the big) stuff - give it to God. Commit your way to Him and He shall bring it to pass. Posted February 4, 2009 at 8:55 PM Jonathan Vigh, ACF Secretary and co-Webmaster January 28, 2009Devotional Thought"But also for this very reason, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue, to virtue knowledge, to knowledge self-control, to self-control perseverance, to perseverance godliness, to godliness brotherly kindness, and to brotherly kindness love. For these things are yours and abound, you will be neither barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ." ~ II Peter 1:5-8. NKJV It can be easy to forget that God not only saves us from our sins, but He doesn't stop there - He wants us to walk with Him each day fully surrendered to Him as He fashions us into new creatures. He has given us this "ladder" of sanctification to aid in our growth. No, it is not for us to try to climb on our own power and try to become "better" - if we try to do this in our own strength, we may have the outward appearance of good works, but ultimately, we will fail utterly - true heart change and sanctification only come from God. We need to rely completely on Him for strength every day: "for it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure." ~ Philippians 2:13. Jonathan Vigh, ACF Secretary and co-Webmaster January 21, 2009Devotional Thought"My son, give me your heart, and let your eyes observe my ways." Proverbs 23:26. "Keep thy heart with all diligence, for out of it spring the the issues of life." Proverbs 4:23. "Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me." Revelation 3:20. NKJV. Have you ever considered that two powers are seeking to control your mind? In this "Age of Self Evidence," it's easy to think that we are the one's calling the shots in our own minds. But both God and Satan are decidedly battling for you. The stakes are high. Satan uses our feelings (e.g. pleasures, fears, likes, dislikes, etc.) and outright lies to try to manipulate us into staying under his banner, while God uses reason (see Isaiah 1:18) and truth. None of us are safe unless we maintain a constant connection with God - unless we trust completely in Him as our Lord and Savoir. If we are wearing His robe of Righteousness, the enemy can't touch us. Will you choose to surrender your heart completely to God? He has an amazing journey waiting for you!
