Research
Dr. Peek’s research focuses on the intersection of social inequality, vulnerability,
and disasters. Her most recent research projects include an exploration of
identity formation processes among second-generation Muslim Americans after
the September 11 terrorist attacks, a longitudinal study of children’s
experiences in Louisiana following Hurricane Katrina, and an examination of
the relocation experiences of parents and children who were displaced to
the state of Colorado in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Dr. Peek has
been awarded research grants from the American Association of University
Women, the College of Liberal Arts at Colorado State University, the
Midwest Sociological Society, the National Institute of Mental Health, the
National Science Foundation, the Natural Hazards Center at the University
of Colorado, and the Public Entity Risk Institute. She is a National
Institute of Mental Health Research Education in Disaster Mental Health
(REDMH) Fellow, and is also the Associate Chair of Research Projects for
the Social Science Research Council (SSRC) Task Force on Hurricane Katrina
and Rebuilding the Gulf Coast. Recently, Dr. Peek served as the Guest
Editor for a special issue on children and disasters for the journal Children, Youth
and Environments.
Teaching
Dr. Peek teaches the following undergraduate courses at
Colorado State University: Contemporary Race-Ethnic Relations (SOC
205), Contemporary Sociological Theory (SOC 302), Methods of
Sociological Inquiry (SOC
311), Sociology of Disaster (SOC 463), and Social
Movements and Collective Behavior (SOC 474). She also teaches Methods of Qualitative Analysis (SOC
610) at the graduate level.
In 2007, Dr. Peek received the Best Teacher Award
from the Colorado State University Alumni Association and the Student
Alumni Connection and the Excellence in Teaching Award
from the College of Liberal Arts. She also received the Waterpik
Excellence in Education Award from Colorado State University
Athletics in 2007, and she has twice been awarded an Outstanding
Faculty Member Designation from the Colorado State University Greek
Community.
