This site was selected as a key wildland urban interface area which contains the main access to 200 homes in Deerfield, Log Hill Village, Fairway Pines, Waterview, Log Hill Crest, The Edge, Sunridge, Ponderosa Crest, Pinyon Peak, Enclave, Keller-Hills, and other subdivisions on the south end of Log Hill Mesa. The south rim / escarpment of Log Hill Mesa contains a fire chimney adjacent to County Road 1 (the primary access to the mesa top from the valley). Prevailing winds are from the southwest. This fire chimney is a likely path of a wind-driven wildland fire from the Pleasant Valley area to the many subdivisions of Log Hill Mesa. The south rim has been identified as extremely hazardous due to south and southwest exposures, steep slopes, and heavy, continuous fuels. Any advancing fire downslope or within the chimney below the Log Hill Mesa Rim would likely force the closure of County Road 1, cutting off the main escape route for residents, and ingress-egress of mutual aid responses of the several fire departments of Ouray County. This fuels reduction project is partially funded by the USDA Forest Service Rural Community Assistance / Economic Action Program.
