We cordially and enthusiastically invite you to attend the 27th annual conference of the Professional and Organizational Development (POD) Network in Higher Education to be held from October 9 - 13, 2002 at the Crowne Plaza Ravinia Hotel, in Atlanta, Georgia, U.S.A.. The theme of the conference this year is "Hold fast the dream."
The conference offers a selection of workshops, plenary sessions, discussion/presentations, roundtable/consultations, and poster sessions as well as a resource fair, all addressing the areas of faculty, instructional, and organizational development. Information concerning POD as an organization and the nature of this year's conference can be found below.
Experienced PODders know that the POD conference is not your typical annual meeting. The nature of the conference (and the organization itself) stresses participation, interaction, collaboration, and inclusion. Networking is more than simply a part of the organization's name. It is an integral part of POD's philosophy and practice. Networking occurs not just within the confines of the sessions, but also at meals, in hallways, and on the expeditions. To foster this process, POD has always contracted with our host site to provide a special group package daily rate that includes room accommodations, taxes, gratuities, meals and refreshment breaks. If you are new to the organization, we promise you that this group package significantly enhances your conference experience. Unlike some other conferences, getting a room at another hotel, grabbing a bite at a fast food place, and simply dropping in on selected presentations will not give you the "POD experience" that our members know so well and value so much.
We encourage you, indeed strongly urge you, to make your room reservation with the Crowne Plaza Ravinia by September 16, 2002. Our room block is released after that and the special rate cannot be guaranteed. Remember that the hotel daily package rate includes not only your room but also meals apart from Friday evening, which is Adinner on your own@.

Overview of the POD Network and POD Conference
The POD Network
POD supports a network of nearly 1,200 members B faculty and teaching assistant developers, faculty members, administrators, consultants, publishers, and others. While POD members come primarily from the U.S. and Canada, the membership also represents other countries. The POD Network and its members lead and support change for the improvement of higher education through faculty, instructional, and organizational development activities.
The POD Mission
The Professional and Organizational Development Network in Higher Education fosters human development in higher education through faculty, instructional, and organizational development. POD believes that people have value, as individuals and as members of groups. POD considers the development of students a fundamental purpose of higher education that requires for its success effective advising, teaching, leadership, and management. Central to Pod's philosophy is lifelong, holistic, personal, and professional learning, growth, and change for the higher education community.
The POD Annual Conference
The POD Network's annual conference attracts both experienced and novice practitioners in the fields of faculty, instructional, and organizational development. The conference also appeals to administrators, faculty, teaching assistant developers, graduate students, publishers for the above audiences, and members of other higher education organizations. The "spirit of POD" is an integral part of conference planning with particular attention paid to creating a collegial and welcoming environment, respecting diversity in all its forms throughout the conference, and offering sessions and informal opportunities for dialogue that address the needs and concerns of the broad range of post-secondary institutions that POD serves. All conference presenters are members of the POD Network.

The 2002 annual conference of The Professional and Organizational Development Network in Higher Education will be held at the beautiful Crowne Plaza Ravinia Hotel in metropolitan Atlanta, a thriving and historically rich city of the American South. It is a city that rose from the ashes of war and then went on in the 20th century to nurture the dreams of opportunity, equality, and freedom. We will celebrate our dreams at this conference!
There are many dreams in higher education: the dreams of undergraduate students who look to higher education for a better life; the dreams of graduate students who hope to find a life in academia; the dreams of faculty who hope to touch the future through their scholarship and their teaching; the dreams of institutions that see themselves making the future better for their students, their faculty and staff; the dreams of nations that look to higher education to provide the leaders and solutions for the future of this increasingly multicultural world. We have dreams, too, as individuals, as professionals, as a profession. All these dreams and how we can achieve them are the focus of the POD 2002 annual conference. We invite you to bring your dreams to Atlanta and share them with the rest of us.
During the conference we will be looking at the dreams of higher education, past, present, and future. Have they been achieved? Will they come true? What has contributed to their success or failure? What should be our dreams as a profession? What can we do to make them come true, for ourselves, for our faculty colleagues, for our students, for our institutions, for our nations, for the world?
In addition to addressing the theme and the general categories of faculty, instructional, and organizational development, this conference, as with other meetings in the past will have several tracks. Efforts will be made in program scheduling (tempered by the number of proposals accepted, space availability, and audiovisual requests) to minimize competition between track sessions and to create threads of concurrent sessions that participants can follow. The following tracks will be built into the conference in addition to the variety of other topics appropriate to the POD mission.
TA Development / Preparing Future Faculty
Today=s graduate students will be the ones charged with carrying out the dreams and promises for the future as well as dreaming their own dreams. Are they ready? How are we helping them get ready? What are the dreams and fears of the next generation of faculty? How does the TA experience help graduate students envision alternative futures beyond the research university environment? Can the changing vision of graduate education offer new dreams and possibilities for the future of higher education?
This POD conference will provide a selection of pre-conference, concurrent, and roundtable sessions for TA developers and those affiliated with national initiatives such as "Preparing Future Faculty" or "Re-envisioning the Ph.D."
Experienced Developers - Managing Organizational Change
Could there be a more important topic for holding fast the dream than managing organizational change? This track is designed for faculty developers with 8, 10 or more years of experience. Topics will include such areas as leadership and organizational change, ways that faculty developers can initiate organizational change, becoming an integral part of the change process, promoting change with department chairs, cooperating with administrative units to effect systemic change, ways to effect systemic institutional impact on our individual campuses, and the role of faculty development in institutional strategic planning.
Instructional Technology
It is obvious that technology is leading the way for innovative instruction, but is it ready to hold fast to the dreams it promises?
How will faculty roles and responsibilities be affected through distance learning and virtual universities? How might it alter the nature of faculty work? How will it change faculty development? Will it affect the programs we offer and the way we offer them? Will it change the dreams we have for the future of the profession?
Diversity
While pre-conference, roundtable, and concurrent sessions specifically addressing diversity issues are welcomed, we encourage that the issue of diversity in whatever forms it may be conceived be woven throughout conference sessions whether they address instructional technology, organizational change, TA development, or any other POD topic.
Areas of discussion might include how technology differentially affects diverse populations, how faculty developers can impact campus culture with regard to diversity, how diversity is addressed in our TA development programs, and a host of other issues.
Research-Based
For faculty development to grow as a profession, we need to concern ourselves with the quality and grounding of the advice we give. This means that we include research-based sessions in addition to those that are more descriptive in nature.
Conference registration fees are as follows. These fees are also listed on the registration form itself.
Early-bird conference registration is due by September 9th.
Pre-conference workshop fees are $50 for a half-day workshop and $100 for a full-day workshop.
Expedition fees vary, and the fees are indicated in the description.

Dr. Tatum is the newly selected President of Spelman College. Her book Why are all the black kids sitting together in the cafeteria?: And other conversations about race is a widely acclaimed discussion of race relations and has had a tremendous impact on the way institutions and individuals think about this topic.

AOn the Threshold of a Dream: Emerging Visions of Faculty Life @
Dr. Wergin is professor of educational studies at Virginia Commonwealth University and a senior scholar with the American Association for Higher Education. He was the founding director of Faculty Roles and Rewards at AAHE.
A special interactive plenary on Thursday evening. Conducted by Dr. James Eison, University of South Florida, and Dr. Barbara Millis, U.S. Air Force Academy
Since this conference is about the dreams of higher education, we felt it appropriate to explore our own dreams. Drs. Eison and Millis have planned an interactive session for our first evening to involve us all in planning our dreams, not just for the conference but for the future.

This workshop is for people who are new to instructional, faculty, or organizational development. It is intended for (a) people who are starting (or considering starting) a new program at their institution, (b) people who are joining existing programs as professional staff, and (c) members of faculty advisory committees. The program will (a) provide an overview of the field of instructional and faculty development, (b) look at possible program activities, (c) address organizational, financial, and political issues in program operation, and (d) identify resources for additional learning on this topic. All participants will receive A Guide to Faculty Development: Practical Advice, Examples, and Resources.

W2 Engaging Faculty: Designing Effective Workshop Sessions and Other Instructional Programs

This interactive, practice-oriented session is designed for new faculty developers. Course design principles will provide the theoretical framework. W3 Developing and Assessing Faculty Institutes for Integrating Technology into Teaching Starrett, David

Over two-thirds of faculty at our University have attended our instructional technology Institutes since 1997. The resulting improvement in faculty skills has led to campus transformation, including vigorous efforts to offer on-line courses across the curriculum. This workshop uses surveys, worksheets, and discussion of twelve critical planning questions to give faculty developers, faculty, and administrators insight into issues surrounding development and implementation of a successful instructional technology Institute for faculty. Discussion topics will lead participants to numerous institutionally-appropriate assessment tools designed to garner campus-wide support for funding the Institute and its acceptance as a transformative tool.

W4 Faculty and TA Development Partnerships: Theoretical Insights and Real Applications!

Moving in and out of partnership with individuals, departments, or other campus units is an integral, often invisible, part of faculty and TA development work. How we identify new partnerships, nurture those ongoing, and evolve mature partnerships substantially impacts the success and quality of our interactions. This session--intended for new and experienced developers--examines the partnership process, first using insights gained from research and then applying these insights to cases generated by participants. Through case study discussions, participants will emerge with new strategies for, and insights into, partnership as a key element of their development work.

W5 Transforming Ourselves and Organizations Using Kegan and Lahey's Seven Languages

This session will provide an opportunity for participants to learn how to use Robert Kegan and Lisa Lahey's Seven Languages for Transformation as a framework for individual and organizational transformation. Both novice and experienced facilitators will learn by engaging in the suggested exercises, sharing ideas, and observing one another. The exercises are designed to facilitate personal transformation through reflection on the four mental languages and to facilitate leadership through reflection on the three social languages. In additional to individual learning, participants will be encouraged to work toward a group objective-perfecting a structured experience using the Kegan and Lahey framework.

W6 Dreaming of Increased Student Engagement with Material? Act Up!

Through drama games and exercises, instructors can help students of various learning styles interact with course material in new ways, thereby furthering understanding and expanding perspectives on the subject. In this session, faculty developers and TA trainers will participate in representative exercises. They will collaborate to develop lessons implementing this approach for a variety of disciplines. We will consider a case study of a course that was Aturned around @ by introducing these techniques. This is a follow-up to the successful AWhose Class is it Anyway @ session from POD 2000. Please bring a sample syllabus to use as a starting point.

W7 Those Who Dare to Dream: Facilitating Faculty Involvement in Change

How do faculty create changes in teaching and learning within departments? What might this mean for faculty developers? Linking faculty development to institutional change requires understanding of faculty involvement in departmental change. This three part workshop uses the Kolb Learning Cycle to involve participants in examining our experiences with faculty involvement in change; exploring a recent dissertation and qualitative research findings; analyzing factors; designing conceptual models and metaphors of faculty involvement in change; and discussing implications for chairs, deans, and faculty. Finally, we'll dare to dream about faculty development's role as partners in change.

W8 Developing and Interpreting Teaching Philosophy Statements

The teaching philosophy statement (TPS) has been identified as an increasingly requested source of information in hiring, promotion and tenure procedures at many institutions. In many cases, neither the graduate students and faculty making application, nor the administrators making decisions have guidance or experience in the development and interpretation of TPSs. This workshop will be of interest to and will benefit from the participation of graduate students, faculty, GTA developers, faculty developers, and administrators. Based on a review of current literature, participants will contribute to the development of a rigorous academic model for writing and interpreting TPSs through various collaborative exercises.

W9 Using Assessment to Realize Dreams for Student Learning

One dream of educational institutions, faculty, and students is that program goals for student achievement be realized. Assessment plays a critical role in this. Faculty need to learn how to assess programs. In this practical and highly interactive session, you will learn how to develop faculty assessment competencies, the rationales for assessment, how to determine goals, how to assess student outcomes in many ways, and how to use the results to improve instruction and learning. You will also strategize the appropriate role of faculty developers in assessment. This workshop is intended primarily for those new to assessment.

W10 Managing Time, Paper, and Information: Dream, Nightmare, or Reality?

Professors cite lack of time as a source of frustration and anxiety. It is a reality that much of the teaching support we offer through faculty development programs goes "unimplemented" because faculty (legitimately) bemoan their lack of time for making the changes. If we can help faculty with their time and organizational challenges, it will ultimately lead to more effective teaching and learning opportunities. The dreams that faculty members have of touching the future through their scholarship and their teaching cannot be realized until they have their time, paper, and information under control, and this can be a reality.

W11 Developing the Dream: Small College Approaches to Faculty Learning and Teaching

Those involved in supporting faculty learning/teaching at small colleges face unique challenges. In this workshop, co-facilitated by a team of new and experienced faculty/center directors, all participants will share concerns, insights and solutions to many of the challenges. These topics, developed through the POD small college listserv, will be addressed in a small group, interactive format: new faculty orientation and mentoring, technology in teaching, scholarship of teaching and learning, using local "experts", and faculty evaluation through portfolios. Participants should bring copies of materials related to these topics for sharing and be prepared to develop a set of recommendations/products for dissemination. Fee: $50
W12 Team Learning: A Special Way of Using Small Groups

When you (or faculty who come to you for advice) use learning groups, do students complain about such things as: -Having to do more than their fair share of the work? -Not being able to keep their group working on the assigned task? -One or two members dominating the group? If so, students are NOT the problem. It's the way they are using the groups. In this session, you'll learn why and what you can do that will both eliminate these kinds of problems by transforming groups into learning teams. Fee: $50
W13 Leading Academic Change: Why Some Change Efforts Work and Others Don't

Successful change is a team sport. How do you build an effective team who understand the stages that any change process must follow if it is to become permanently embedded in the culture? Use these skills with your own center and advisory committee, or teach them to academic chairs. Access chairs directly or through the deans. Examples of effective academic change, and what went wrong when change was not successful, serve as a frame of reference for identifying where you are in your own change efforts and what you can do to maximize success.

W14 Evaluating the Return on Investment of Faculty Development

How can the return on investment of faculty development be determined? This session will review a return on investment process and discuss its application to faculty development. An example of the return on investment of one particular faculty development program will be given. The workshop will be interactive and will include sample tools and techniques. The aim of the workshop will be to introduce participants to an ROI process, provide tools, techniques and examples and to facilitate brainstorming sessions about difficult issues. Participants will complete an action plan to apply return on investment techniques within their faculty development practices.

Our educational expeditions provide yet another kind of networking opportunity for conference participants while they also enjoy scenic, historical, and cultural sites in the region. Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis and must be indicated on the conference registration form when you send it in. Because of transportation scheduling and contracts, refunds for expeditions will be honored only if you cancel your entire conference registration before September 27. An additional fee of $10.00 is collected for on-site expedition registrations, if space is available. Departure points will be indicated in the conference program.
E1 E.L. Houie Facility and Panola Mountain State Conservation Park
Thursday, October 10, 6:30am-12:00 noon
A nature adventure -- on this expedition we will hike through woodlands and along ponds at the E. L. Houie Facility, said to be the Atlanta area=s Asingle best all-around birding area @ and Aone of the best inland locations for YY waterbirds @ in Georgia. Then we will drive to Panola Mountain State Conservation Park, noted for its rare plants and unusual geologic features and views of Piedmont Plateau terrain, including Stone Mountain and the Atlanta skyline. We will have the assistance of a local professional naturalist. Bring foul-weather gear and strong walking shoes. Binoculars, spotting scope, field guides, and camera will help. A box breakfast will be provided.

E2 CNN Exclusive VIP Studio Tour
Friday, October 11, 12:15pm - 5:00 pm
The CNN Exclusive VIP Studio Tour allows guests to visit areas not accessible to the general public. The tour guides guests through an insider's view of CNN, Headline News and CNN International to see how breaking news is reported to over 200 million households worldwide. After the tour, participants will also have the opportunity to be a part of CNN's audience participation television show, "Talkback Live". A box lunch will be provided.

E3 All Around Atlanta
Friday, October 11, 1:30pm - 5:00 pm
This bus tour will take you all around the city of Atlanta. The expedition includes a walk along the avenues of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Center, where you will visit the MLK memorial and view exhibits that chronicle the Civil Rights Movement. You will also visit the Jimmy Carter Museum and Library and the World of Coca-Cola Museum, see the 1996 Olympic venues, the Woodruff Arts Center, government district and State Capitol, and pass by some of Atlanta=s beautiful homes such as the historic Swan House and the Governor =s Mansion.

E4 Atlanta Past and Present
Saturday, October 12, 8:30am - noon
Take a journey through time and visit some of Atlanta =s most well-known historic and cultural attractions. This expedition begins with a trip to the Atlanta Cyclorama which portrays the Battle of Atlanta in a unique and unforgettable diorama, followed by a step into history as you tour the home of Margaret Mitchell, author of Gone With the Wind . The expedition continues with landmarks that tell the story of Atlanta =s growth into one of the South =s most progressive cities: Georgia Tech, the Olympic Village, Coca-Cola =s Worldwide Headquarters, CNN Center, the Georgia World Congress Center, and Turner Field.

E5 Atlanta African-American Heritage Tour
Saturday, October 12, 1:45 pm - 5:00pm
Atlanta is recognized as a city of African-American history and achievement. This expedition follows the trail of Atlanta =s African-American heritage while illuminating Black life and achievement in the city from the Civil War to the present day. Visit the Martin Luther King National Historic District, including Ebenezer Baptist Church, Dr. King =s tomb and birth home, and exhibits from the Civil Rights movement.
Fee:$25 Minimum: 27 persons Maximum: 45persons
E6 Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area and Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park
Saturday, October 12, 12:30pm - 5:30 pm
During this expedition, we will start out hiking along the river in the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area, where we will look for birds and other animals and interesting plants. Then we visit the Chattahoochee Nature Center where, among other things, we will walk the wetland boardwalk and view live birds of prey in the raptor repair center. Our third stop is the Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park, scene of an Atlanta Campaign battle where over 67,000 soldiers were killed, wounded, or captured. There we will find spectacular views, a museum and interpretive center, and first-rate birding at the preeminent Atlanta-area location for observing migrating raptors. Bring foul-weather gear and strong walking shoes. Binoculars, field guides, and camera will help.

Please read this information carefully to avoid problems with hotel room reservations. The hotel is the Crown Plaza Ravinia. Be sure to specify that you are making reservations for the POD Network conference to ensure that you get the POD package rate.
If you are traveling by air, Atlanta is served by most major airlines.
Attendees can call the hotel at 1-800-554-0055 between the hours of 8:00 am and 7:00 pm Monday through Friday. After hours, reservations can be sent via email to myoast@cpravinia.com. Reservations cannot be made from the Crowne Plaza Ravinia website. You must identify yourself as making reservations for the POD Network conference and must have a means of guarantee.
The room/meals package rate is $206.00single per night (inclusive of 12% tax) and $140.00 per person per night for double, triple, and quad rooms (also inclusive of 12% tax).
There will be a $50.00 charge for early departures.

Public Transportation Information
For $1.75 you can take the MARTA North Springs train from the Atlanta Hartsfield Airport to Dunwoody Station, and the hotel shuttle will pick you up. To be picked up, call the hotel shuttle at 678-409-3533. This hotel shuttle is complimentary.
There is also the Atlanta Superior Shuttle, which leaves the airport every half hour. To take this shuttle, go to outside ground transportation at portal C8. The cost is $19.00 one way and $35.00 round trip. For more information call 770-457-4794.

Traveling WEST on I-20, take exit #67B (1-285 north). Proceed to exit 29 (Ashford Dunwoody Rd.). Turn right on Ashford-Dunwood Rd. The Crowne Plaza Ravinia will be on your immediate right.
Traveling EAST on I-20, take exit #51B (I-285 north). Proceed to exit 29 (Ashford Dunwoody Rd.). Turn left on Ashford Dunwoody Rd., and cross the bridge. The Crowne Plaza Ravinia will be on your immediate right.
Traveling SOUTH on I-75, take exit for I-285 east. Proceed to exit 29 (Ashford Dunwoody Rd.). Turn left on Ashford Dunwoody Rd., and cross the bridge. The Crowne Plaza Ravinia will be on your immediate right.
Traveling NORTH on I-75, take exit for I-285 east. Proceed to exit 29 (Ashford Dunwoody Rd.). Turn left on Ashford Dunwoody Rd., and cross the bridge. The Crowne Plaza Ravinia will be on your immediate right.

Mailing Instructions for Materials
If you have materials to mail for your presentation and/or for the resource fair, they should be sent to the hotel such that they arrive within two days of the October 9 start of the conference. The Crowne Plaza Ravinia has limited storage space for parcels, packages, and other materials. You are requested to follow these simple guidelines.

In October, the temperature in Atlanta is likely to range from the mid-50' to the upper 70's. Rain is a possibility.
Meals, Meal Tickets, and Special Dietary Needs
The POD conference package plan covers all meals beginning with dinner on your day of arrival and breakfast on the day of your departure B with the exception of Friday night, which is Adinner on your own. @ Meal tickets will be provided to you when you pick up your registration materials. For persons not staying at the hotel, a limited number of individual meal tickets will be available for purchase at the registration desk. The prices for individual meals (which include food, tax, and gratuity) are $24.00 for lunch and $39.00 for dinner.
Attendees with special dietary needs must so indicate on the registration form, and the hotel staff will do all possible to meet these requests. These requests, however, can only be guaranteed to be honored if received in advance, no later than October 4th..
Resource Fair
On Friday, October 11, from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. we will offer the annual Materials and Resource Fair, where participants can display and distribute information about their programs, projects, publications, and services. This is an excellent opportunity to share materials and practices from your institution as well as to gather new ideas from colleagues at other colleges and universities.
Persons who display materials must be registered for the conference and are expected to be at their tables to talk with conference participants during the entire session. Your table must be reserved in advance, and you must indicate your request on the registration form.
TA Developers= Breakfast
To facilitate networking among TA Developers, you are invited to gather for breakfast in a separate room from the general dining area on Saturday morning. The organizers would like to know who will be attending and request that you so indicate on the registration form.

Refund Policy: A full refund, minus $25 processing fee, will be made if cancellation is received by September 9, 2002. A $75 cancellation fee will be retained between September 9-October 7. Other than in the case of personal emergency, no refunds can be made after October 7, 2002. Telephone cancellations will be accepted, but must be confirmed in writing. Substitutions in attendee may be made at any time. Because of transportation scheduling and contracts, refunds for expeditions will be honored only if you cancel your entire conference registration before September 27.
