Graduate Students
The goals of
the Colorado PEAKS Alliance are to establish sustainable
campus frameworks and programs that facilitate the development
of cohorts of Ph.D. scholars and academic leaders in
science, mathematics and engineering (SME) fields from
underrepresented groups that continue into the professoriate.
The PEAKS
Alliance has developed the following initiatives
for achieving these goals:
GRADUATE STUDENT OPPORTUNITIES
Teaching and Research Fellowships: PEAKS institutions
offer teaching fellowships that include a $15,000 stipend
and full tuition for first year underrepresented doctoral students.
Departments guarantee long-term support for students
making good progress toward the Ph.D.
Diversity Fellowships: Incoming underrepresented doctoral
students are eligible for $2,500 diversity fellowships,
along with a $3,500 research fellowship for the summer
following the first year.
Professional Development Activities: All incoming
PEAKS graduate students will participate in existing
teacher training activities, such as the Colorado Preparing
Future Faculty Network. The PEAKS Alliance will implement
new research symposia and information technology training
opportunities.
GRADUATE PREPARATION AND PIPELINE PROGRAMS
Summer Research Internships for Undergraduates:
The PEAKS Alliance will build upon the success of CU-Boulder's
SMART program by offering summer research internships
to outstanding underrepresented undergraduates from around the
US.
CO-AMP: The PEAKS Alliance will capitalize
on the CSU led Louis Stokes Colorado Alliance for Minority
Participation (CO-AMP) infrastructure to reach outstanding
underrepresented undergraduate students in Colorado and the
Four Corners Region who might pursue graduate degrees
at PEAKS institutions. CO-AMP, which has focused on
undergraduate retention and recruitment activities,
will be expanded to include graduate student recruitment.
Undergraduate Academic Support Programs: The
PEAKS Alliance will enhance the undergraduate programs
that support underrepresented SME students, such as the Minority
Engineering Programs (MEP's), on each campus.
Institutional Partnerships: Both CU-Boulder
and CSU have formed partnerships with Historically Black
Colleges and Universities and Hispanic Serving Institutions.
In addition, both universities have cooperative ventures
with federal laboratories in the Rocky Mountain Region.
